fishing "Lip Grippers" - please name the good & better models

Hi,

I'm interested in getting a fishing "lip gripper" to land fish from the boat

I've seen them from about $30 to well over $100 for what look basically the same looking item

obviously there are differences that are inbuilt with-in the 'handle' of the gripper, maybe the spring expanding mechanism etc.

Have no thought of paying for the top of the tree model if the lesser $$ work as advertised (maybe it's a big 'if' )

Regards

Mate the Boga is the best

But they are the exxy ones. I got one for about $70, not Boga, and the name escapes me, but its a fishing brand like Black magic etc. If you realy wanted to know I will check it after work. But it has a blue handle, weighs up to 20kg and has never failed, stuck or corroded over 2 yrs off frequent use.

The ell cheapos fail, and isnt worth the coin.

If you want it to weigh the fish too, then Boga for sure.

I have a cheapy from KMART for kayaking just incase i lose it overboard etc. Made by Berkley, never had an issue with it, hasnt rusted up as all (flush with fresh water after every use). All is good!

Weight wise Boga is heavier

Weight wise Boga is heavier because it is made up of good quality stainless steel and of course the Scale is IGFA certified. Secondly, it has a swivel grip, so if the fish were to thrash around that would absorb some of the thrashing.

If you are not concerned about the weighing scale, then all the other aluminium versions will do. Take note though those aluminium ones such as Pro Grip by Gillies does not have a swivel grip. When the fish thrash around after being lip grip it is very likely the gill rakers will be damaged. Pros: Lighter to use

In any case, always support the fish by the belly when lifting it onto a boat. That will minise damage done to the fish.

Also, I notice the Pro Grip scale is faulty. Weight a 10kg sack of rice and it never go past the 8kg mark. It becomes worse when you mark around with the screw on cover at the end of the handle where the spring is located.

Berkley

Fri, 2012-07-13 11:09

I have Berkley, picked it up fpr around $45, i have had no problem with them handling big cod, makies & trout up north. It has a good wrist strap with an adjusting bead so it wont slip off.

I also have a set of scales on board incase i feel the need to weigh a fish, we normaly put it on a 'brag mat' to measure it then back to the water. Each to their own i suppose.

cheers & be safe

Rob

The one I have is berkley. Thanks Rob for reminding me. Now I dont have to climb in the boat!!! That means the fat gut will get fatter.

I am sure I paid about $70, ripped off again by the Pilbara.

Fri, 2012-07-13 12:30

I use digital scales for weighing rather than the grips. More accurate than most spring scales (the bogas might be an exception but they're $200+ for a model than can weigh past 10kg).

I bought a pair at oceanside ages ago which was the best cheap pair i've come across. It lasted maybe 2 years, but it was onlt $20! Then by luck I saw the same model in a servo at dunsborough and bought another one! Its not smooth, it eventually rusts, but for $20 is pretty good! Has a foam handle, big jaws and is a lot more comfortable than any of those other ones with knobby hard handles. Brand is the arafura one.

Of course if you want quality to last, then look at the bogas. For $20 that last me 2+ years i'm happy with my cheapie pair :p

Im currently using the piscifun fish lip gripper. I know it costs more than $30 but its an excellent investment. Definitely one of the best fish lip grippers.
