Fishing today out of Hillarys!

After a few to many cold rebacks last night, the skipper slept well. He awoke at 5am to find Deckie (Claire) had been up for a while and had sorted Lunch, and had packed the boat with rods ect. Short trip down to Hillarys boat ramp, uncovered what i can only say as Bloody busy chaos! The carpark was near on half full at 6am in the morning.

With a light eastly blowing on our backs, we headed out to our king george spot in the 40s west of Hillarys. Must of passed a couple of hundred Professional cray pots on the way out, which thankfully ended at around 30m mark.  We arrived at our spot and a light eastly it was giving us just the right drift speed. First drift i pulled up a couple of flathead, and claire a king wrasse. The second drift was better with Claire picking up a nice King George at 50cm.

We had a few more drifts, and few more Kg runs, but today they were smarter than us, and were being hard to hook. The wind started to die down to nothing...and with that the fish shut down.  We then headed to a nice lump we found some time back, and was glad to see some action on the sounder.

We set up our first drift and sent out occy/mulie cocktail to the bottom. It wasnt long before Claire was getting smoked by something big, and after 10 mins her hook straightened, and she lost her fish. Normally there is only skippy at this spot..but today old mate sambo had moved in.  Next drift a few rat sambos were raised, which were around 60cm, and then my rod buckled over.

A few big runs and 20 mins later, i could see my fish coming to the surface. The big sambo was about 10 m under the boat when all of a sudden, she was gone...it rubbed thru my leader.  Claire proceeded to calm me down, but after 20mins and 28 litres of sweat running down my back..i wasnt at all happy. We then rigged up with heavier leader and bigger hooks. We then had a few more drifts but they bigger fish were no where to be seen just rats evrywhere.

With no more big fish showing up and the wind starting to blow from the south west, it was time to head home. Got back to the ramp and there was a line up of about 20 boats. We loaded old traily up and headed for home..another lovely day on the water!

Nothing worse than missing out on a day like today mate!  There were dive  flags sailing everywhere...once we got out past three mile, we had the ocean to ourselves.

Most people were doing the righty. Old couple in the morning had a go at a guy who launched at the retrive ramp. His boat was off the trailer and about to take off..then the nomads came in and pulled up behind him. He told them he needs to get past..that when the fun began!

on occasion id come in with my grandparents, get the boat out, fillet the catch then theyd park up in good view of the ramp and sit there with a 6 pack laughing at all the stuff ups as people tried to retrieve their boats...theres some truly funny arguments especially between husband and wife teams!

thanks wade, unfortunately i don't have a gps on my boat, much less a sounder. Approximately how far is this out from shore? i only got a 4.2m tinny so i don't dare to go more than 2 nautical miles out.

Cheers
