has anyone else had the problom of when you take a picture of the fish and youre id tag that the flash cuts out all the details on youre id tag and leaves you with a white blur , i lamenated it and it is now worse the id tag looks alright during the day but as soon as you get to any stage of darkness that you need a flash you just cant see any details
any suggestions ????

What kind of camera do you
What kind of camera do you have? If merely a fill flash, then adjusting the flash output can help. Also, it would be the 'highlights blowing' which you can solve by adjusting your EV down a few notches. This will be under the P setting, and will make the photo darker overall (so the badge doesnt wash out). Lastly, some cameras have something called 'highlight tone priority' and putting this on can stop overexposed whites.
Or just move so the person with the fish is facing the sun :p

At night, try the EV trick.
At night, try the EV trick. Also, you can put a bit of scotch tape over the flash (or better yet a scrunched up tissue, or just cover with a single layer) and it will soften the light a lot. It could be that your focus is off too. If its laminated and its perfectly facing the camera, theres not much you can do unfortunately (but could try scotch tape over it, if you can still read it).
Should just be a matter of bumping your EV down a notch or two though, nothing too complicated (check your manual). Just try a few test pics in the yard at night til you get it right. Reducing flash power may help (depending on how the camera does it).
Edit: Whats happening is either the laminate is acting like a reflector (but you said it did it before laminating) or theres so much white around the lettering that the light is seeping over on the pixels of your sensor which drowns out the letters. Like when stepping outside from a dim room.

Matt's suggestions would be
Matt's suggestions would be the best, but if it is quick and dirty you want - you could try angling the laminated sheet, so that the flash reflects away from the camera rather than back at the lens. Might take a bit of trial and error to find the right angle, but it can be done. Otherwise print the tag as white lettering on a dark background...

Snow mode applies that
Snow mode applies that 'highlight tone priority' I mentioned (which is useful when shooting bright white things like snow or wedding dresses). Good to see you found an easy setting for it to work. I dont remember the last time I used scenes :p

hey matthijacking the thread
hey matt
hijacking the thread but you seem to know a bit about cameras?
on a home security system they offer differant lens sizes, 6mm,8mm,12mm,16mm i take it that the bigger the lens the better the camera's image?
of course the tvi has alot to do with it but what about the lens?
thanks in advance

Not sure what tvi is, but the
Not sure what tvi is, but the lense sizes are the focal length and is basically the zoom. So the 6mm will be a wider view than the 16mm which will be narrower (useful if your camera is further away from where you're looking so you get a more upclose image)

Ill keep that in mind, i took a few photos with the tag and flash a bit after sunset, seem to have worked alright if you angle it ok.
Headed to the lower reaches of the swan with the gf, we both picked up 3 bream each in a couple of hours. All between 25-30cm so i didnt bother taking any pics with the ID. I assume one over 30 with get picked up over the next month.
