biggest season in the past 15 years and im going to catch 50... in the first week!
Fingers crossed I see one this season, although i did already see one straggler in cockburn sound the other week, it chased my richter popper twice but no take, about 4kgs
Was at mullaloo few weeks ago and a massive school of brown fish swam by. I assumed these were salmon. Swam by us for about 10 minutes it was that big!
I just spent the weekend down there. Caught nothing! No-one I met had caught anything, except a backpacker with a wrasse. I met up with a few locals and they all said they hadn't seen any salmon yet. But as I said - no tailor, not even a herring for us. Apparently a few KGs came out of Greens Pool (not when I was there), if you feel like dodging the swimmers.
It was blowing it guts though, so most of the rock and beach fishing was a bit of a pain in the a....
just came back from esperence..was talking to a mulie fisherman and he said they are starting to school up in HUGE numbers around poison creek..so they should start moving soon. just hopefully the cooler current comes in close to the beaches:D
If thats he case they are incredibly late and if they are in huge school probably means they are spawning or very close to it.
Usually get the first schools showing up round Hamelin now and into Geo bay at the middle to end of March, so IMO forget seeing a salmon on the west coast this season.
If you want to travel, try Albany to Windy harbour because they won't get any further west than that.
how long have you been chasing them? After speaking to a bloke i know who has netted for the pro's over the years said that the pro's down here arn't even bothering to get there nets sorted this season. That's as good a sign as any that they'll be a no show.
I sounded a bit full of myself before but yeah last 8 years or so been chasing them full on. Lack of fish hasnt been the problem, just knowing what to throw at them has! I think ive been lucky!
When the pros aren't even bothering to get their nets out it means that there isn't going to be a west coast season.
Having spent many years in and around the salmon industry and know nearly all the men involved since my first season in 64, I would think I know a few signs that indicate that this is going to be the WORST season since the time I started on the west coast.
Not one to make major predictions but I think/ know what is going on.
i was down in augusta at hamelin/deepdeene on sunday beach fishing ...weather was windy , cool and the odd shower of rain from the southwest weed in the water & on the beaches ......felt like mother nature had turned its face to the start of autumm & salmon weather ...
over the years i can remember some poor seasons ,especially in the bay and north of cape nato but this year i hope we will get them on the capes ...least im not ready to write them off yet ...good rule of thumb is they turn up around the 7-12 march at hamelin./smiths beach ...last year was a late one ..but we had plenty of schools , some up to 80 ton on the beaches by late march
even with the warm SURFACE temps ....their are cold water capes currents the salmon have found in the past ....how often over the years have the demersal gill netters pulled their net in 50mtres + to have half a ton of salmon in them out wide and deep ??
the last few seasons down south have seen good numbers of salmon , im inclined to think they may travel wide or deep to the capes ....bypassing much of the inshore coast waters .similar to last year ....then just flood the capes coast from out wide or deeper ...
commercials have many reasons to not target them .....low price as food fish , poor predicted season for salmon ...low demand /price for cray bait etc on the market ,current licence restrictions ....more money in mulies and bluebait /white bait at present ..when i was a crewie we often went wetlining , and left the salmon gear on the beaches if we got a good run of weather /cannery or market was full for a week ..........demersals pay more and if you can can sell salmon to a market
I just spent 4 days on the south coast in the Albany/Denmark area. The only salmon I got were a few salmon trout that were returned to grow up.
A workmate fished Dillion Bay and Reef Beach(Bremer Bay) and got a few good size Salmon.A mate got a good size salmon from Big Quaram beach(Walpole),then got stuck on a sandhill for 18 hours before we could get a rescue posse out to him.
I feel these catches were resident fish, not schoolies.
I fished Nanarup beach friday morning,no salmon. When I returned in the afternoon the professionals had started moving their gear there.
Speaking to Albany locals, there is a big school in the Fosters Beach(Bremer)area and was a smaller school out in Two Peoples Bay.I fished Two Peoples Bay early saturday and saw a large school of Dolphins(30+) working a school of fish way out in the bay. They seemed to be having a fair old party!!!
There were big swells and high tides on the south coast over the weekend which hampered fishing familiar beaches/rock spots.
I discovered Boat Harbour west of Denmark, what a nice spot.Only managed a 2 foot Port Jackson that went back.
Mate just called me from down the great south to say he caught a few large salmon on the bottom in 40m on jig today! Decant 7kg fish too. Maybe you're right hezzy, staying out wide and deep.
Was at mullaloo few weeks ago and a massive school of brown fish swam by. I assumed these were salmon. Swam by us for about 10 minutes it was that big!
Dare say it was mullet. I have been bodyboarding and swimming at the north end of Mullaloo Beach at least once every week since Jan. Every time i have been there there have been mahoosive schools fo very big mullet swimming from the south to the north. Kind of unerving having that many large schools go around you when your out on a bodyboard.
Would be great for bait or a feed at that sized if you could get them.
I seen a little school of trout in cockburn boat harbour on the weeknd and caught 1 30-40cm and few weeks back seen sum brown fish swimming on top of the water so i threw green straw out and straight away he took it and it was a actual salmon it was green bout 1.5 kg i was amazed wen i pulled it of the water il try upload a foto tonite of it!
So them brown fish that gjoe seen could of been salmon lets hope!!!
well thats not nice, go play with your toys in the norty corner then lol
On Saturday and Sunday we tried for Salmon along Peaceful Bay to Denmark stretchs with no luck.
All the locals on the beach had no luck either with schools off the heads at Walpole way out of casting range and same for a small school seen further south east Denamrk way.
Oh well at least we got KG's for dinner and that was a first for me getting plump KG's off the beach

fun to catch....but lets face it......they taste like shit. not a proper salmon, lol i always put em back for you guys to have a thrill and to help the earth. hahahaha...snappa, spannish mackrel or tailor tho...that bastards comin home
fun to catch....but lets face it......they taste like shit. not a proper salmon, lol i always put em back for you guys to have a thrill and to help the earth. hahahaha...snappa, spannish mackrel or tailor tho...that bastards comin home
If you bleed them, slurry them then cut off the darker bits of flesh they arent too bad. Though one fillet I had off one fish was really wet, but might not be related to the fish as the previous fillet was quite nice actually. Equivalent to tailor or herring no problems. Also had it in a rogan josh curry and it was really nice (you could actually taste the fish so it hadnt been overpowered). Then of course there are fish cakes.
I think a lot of people probably wouldnt like mackies either if they'd been stuck in the sand for a few hours without being bled as it seems a few are (but then, some people properly bleed and slurry them too).
Still, pretty much just a catch and release fish for me though.
Call me crazy but I would trade you a fresh fillet of salmon for a fillet of dhuie any day :) Possibly due to growing up in Walpole and eating more salmon than dhuie... but man I love them, they make my mouth water!
i have eaten salmon several times and when treated and cooked right it is a nice feed. i used to cube up the fillets and covered the pieces in a coating similar to kfc , deep fried and scoffed heaps . you just add spices to your own taste
Fillet, skin, cut out the red flesh and bones. Cut into nice cookable fillets (thicker = juicey, thin = dry but crunchy) and coat with plain flour, fry in olive oil until the edges are crunchy :) usually season with some salt and pepper while it's cooking and then a little more after with a squeeze of lemon..... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yum! Got my mouth watering again!!! Honestly haven't met someone that didn't love it when I've cooked it for them. Simple is best... but also goes great beer battered or curried.
if it gets this far and the temp down deep lifts the demersals are in real troubleThats all we need more bag limit cuts and a bigger closure you wont be able to give a boat away in perth.
haha, i know how you feel mate, i did the same about 2 months after last season. Now its not looking like its going to be a good run this year. Spewin'
Like you said though, it has seen plenty of tailor and even a dhuie.
ive eaten a few salmon fresh and have found them to be fine, i wouldnt bother freezing one though, i just filleted it straight up and whacked it on the barbie, bit of lemon and S&P and it was fine.
I have a brand new 6811 to try out on them and my son has a new 6810 thats wearing an Emblem pro with 30lb braid,,,, my 6811 has 30lb braid running on a Saltiga.
I just received a box of fishing gear from O/S .,.,.,.,, one large box from the US and a nice small box from Japan with some braid, swivels and jigging hooks in it.
( I got a couple of camel backs a while ago so we can carry a few lures a roll of leader and some swivels etc and have 2 litres of water on hand so we can keep hydrated while trudging up and down the beaches)
I'm rigging my raiders with jig hooks swinging off some Kevlar this season to see if my hook up and landing ratio improves when they havn't got the big metal lure to help them shake it out of their mouth ( I run from 40 gram right up to 125 gram lures).
Running back to back or just singles? Hopefully theres a few salmon around to try out the assist hook method and see if it works Brendan.
Last season all my salmon on casted lures had just the single hook and I dont think I dropped one, but I only had 15-30g lures (or <5g flies) so not much to shake and leverage off.
Heading down to dunsborough (annual run) mid next month and starting to get a bit worried now. They hit Injidup late March last year which was considered late then!! By all reports the majority are still Esperence way with a few in Albany so any reports closer to Augusta would be welcomed.
The favourites of most shore based fishers "Salmon" are slowly making their way towards Cape Leeuwin and by Easter I would put money on it they will be in Geo bay. There is a helluva lot of sharks with them, big Fellas at that. So don't stress, late Easter late run.
P.S. There is some in the bay at the minute, good ones.
Thats refreshing to hear squidder, I just cant bring myself to believe all the negative warm water men! I'll be checking it out this weekend for myself, not getting my hopes up too much tho. If i take my missus'ss' 'ss' camera haha ill snap off a few pics and try post em.

there are some 4-5kg fish alot closer to home than you think thank god! Dad had a big fussy school swim by on the long weekend, chased the lures casually and didnt hit, so he threw out a dead herring and they swarmed around it but no takers, wonder how much difference a livie wouldve made!
What do ya rekon the chance of a hook up around albany will be for easter?.... went there last year and cleaned up and am hoping for a repeat occurance
Just confirming my last post about dad seeing a fussy school. Went down to the same spot just before sun down tonight and had 2 big fellas, around 4-5kgs come up from the bottom chasing my Crystal Minnow lure. They chased the lure right up to my feet and unfortunatley ran out of water, another meter and the fish wouldve grabbed it! Spewwing. Sun went down so swapped to a small halco roosta popper to see i could wake any up and lure them from the deep, 5 casts later and had another salmon chasing it for a couple meters before giving up and drifitng back out of sight! Soon it will be on!!
Have heard from a few guys down there the water has noticeably cooled in the last few days...I spose most of the cold water will be inshore so might be alright landbased this year..
Spent last Mon, Tues, Wed and Thurs down at Canal Rocks from 11am till 9pm. Didnt see any salmon, but man there were heaps of little SBT busting up baitfish all around. Saw one group of lads launch, troll around the rocks, pick up a SBT around 5kg then retrieve boat and go home. All in about 30 mins. Was silently crying that i could be out fishing and had to be working :(
Just got back from down south fishing near warren beach we didnt get any all day saturday or this morning. We spent most of the day spinning and this morning. Although an old bloke fishing bait said he got 2 on friday and another bloke landed one around 7kgs on a slice.
Nah definitly not in casting range where i was watching them bust up the schools of baitfish. But if you had a tinnie, a yak, or even wanted to float out on a bit on some floatsom you would get to where they were! About 200m to the shore is where they got to the closet point, mostly about 700-800m out though.
Great news!!!! I have been following this post for a while and starting to think we wouldn't get to see any action..... but there is hope yet!!! You mind saying where you got them????
If you were fishing on your own that makes a fish every 5.5 minutes roughly , time to rebait and cast out , hook up and bring it in, you must be superman.

My gut feeling is
that it will be a shocker. We can only really go by the elders amoung us who have experienced a season with such a strong leeuwin current.
After speaking with a few and reading words from guys like Carnarvonite I wont hold my breath.
Geez i hope there wrong though

We where down at Denmark and Walpole on the long weekend and no Salmon seen at all around the area while there.
Got a few thumper KGs' and bull-herring, plus the complusory eagle ray off Peaceful Bay and my son got a nice sized Tarwhine as well.
One local said a school had been hanging around the heads, but was deep out and not looking promising for the moment.

A friend of a friend was in Pemberton last weekend, I got told that all they could catch was salmon trout.
It'll be a bit of a shame if it's a dud season but fingers crossed we all get surprised!

If you bleed them, slurry

Call me crazy but I would
Call me crazy but I would trade you a fresh fillet of salmon for a fillet of dhuie any day :) Possibly due to growing up in Walpole and eating more salmon than dhuie... but man I love them, they make my mouth water!

i have eaten salmon several times and when treated and cooked right it is a nice feed. i used to cube up the fillets and covered the pieces in a coating similar to kfc , deep fried and scoffed heaps . you just add spices to your own taste

Fillet, skin, cut out the
Fillet, skin, cut out the red flesh and bones.

There wouldnt be enough residents at bunkers if any to school up.

Yeagarup
Sorry for earlier post, Pemberton = Yeagarup. Near enough haha!
I don't mind eating salmon, a lot of people tell me they don't because of how strong the flavour is?
I agree with hlokk though, only if you bleed them.

That is no good
if it gets this far and the temp down deep lifts the demersals are in real trouble
Thats all we need more bag limit cuts and a bigger closure you wont be able to give a boat away in perth.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Running back to back or just
Running back to back or just singles? Hopefully theres a few salmon around to try out the assist hook method and see if it works Brendan.
Last season all my salmon on casted lures had just the single hook and I dont think I dropped one, but I only had 15-30g lures (or <5g flies) so not much to shake and leverage off.

Any updates
Heading down to dunsborough (annual run) mid next month and starting to get a bit worried now. They hit Injidup late March last year which was considered late then!! By all reports the majority are still Esperence way with a few in Albany so any reports closer to Augusta would be welcomed.

Salmon are coming
The favourites of most shore based fishers "Salmon" are slowly making their way towards Cape Leeuwin and by Easter I would put money on it they will be in Geo bay. There is a helluva lot of sharks with them, big Fellas at that. So don't stress, late Easter late run.
P.S. There is some in the bay at the minute, good ones.

there are some 4-5kg fish alot closer to home than you think thank god! Dad had a big fussy school swim by on the long weekend, chased the lures casually and didnt hit, so he threw out a dead herring and they swarmed around it but no takers, wonder how much difference a livie wouldve made!

SALMON ARE IN TOWN!!

Nah definitly not in casting
Nah definitly not in casting range where i was watching them bust up the schools of baitfish. But if you had a tinnie, a yak, or even wanted to float out on a bit on some floatsom you would get to where they were! About 200m to the shore is where they got to the closet point, mostly about 700-800m out though.

If you were fishing on your own that makes a fish every 5.5 minutes roughly , time to rebait and cast out , hook up and bring it in, you must be superman.
