I think you could run most lures past a flatties nose and get a strike, their not fussy. Forget about soft plastics because the blowies will destroy them. I like using Prawnstars (cast pretty well too) or Small to medium sized hardbody lures. Bucktail/maribou jugs are another option that will get you past the blowies.
should be enuff, softplastics work a treat on flatheads just some pink double tails on a jighead or minnows or shaky shads . they will bite anything you throw past them :P
You will probably find that if you drop that to around 10-12lb you will get plenty more interest as it will less likely spook the fish, and you also run that chance of picking up the odd whiting or bream too.
Flathead have quite raspy teeth that wear leaders pretty quickly as generally they will swallow the whole lure leaving the leader exposed. 8lb would suffice, but check your leader often (every fish or two) just above the lure.
I love gold colours, and use 6lb Black Magic fluoro or 8lb Nitlon... used to use 10-12lb but have found an increase in hookups since dropping down.
As far as lure brands go, I don't use anything too fancy. Damiki Mu, old R2S shad, Strike Pro shrimp etc... got some HRT lures on their way too, looking forward to giving them a bash.
Flatties will normally have a go at anything, been doing quite well with snapbacks the last couple weeks, but as Moohan said the blowies tear them apart fairly often, if the flatties are in an area your fishing keep changing your lure or softplastic until your get the results.
Same with the leader strength, start at 10 or 12lb as flangies said and go lighter until you get the results.
IMO fishing for flatties isnt rocket science, more of a case of being in the right place at the right time.
With the colours, I try and match the hatch so to speak, have a look for baitfish swimming around in the area your fishing and pick a colour that is simular to them and you should have much trouble getting them.
The HRT lures are awesome scored a couple the other week and have had nothing but good reports for them.
Have caught everything from trout to yellowbelly, bream, salmon and redfin and the piccys to proove it.Good price also palmfishing sell them and they have some huge lizzards in the picture gallery.
prawn stars are the best, though rmg 52s are also really good, I've heard if they aren't firing the slightly more expensive jap lures work better because of their suttle differences over rmgs like the finish. leader isn't a problem, aslong as its fluro, i've never been cut off, even on 3lb

20lb leader might be a bit
20lb leader might be a bit overkill. I'm sure you could get away with 8lb or so.
And yeah, get it in front of their face and they'll probably bite it.

flathead
IMO,
use prawn star shrimps in either natural, pink or honey pot.
and would use a 4lb-8lb flurocarbon leader, I wouldent go any heavier than that.
also most HBs work like the rmg scorpion, lazer pro, manns stretch 5+, etc.
cheers, Tom
