Flathead in Swan

Hi All,

Spent the day down around Point Walter to see if any flathead have turned up early for the summer season. I used a Penn Slammer 260 with 10lb braid onto 12lb mono with silver and orange switchblades on a full graphite flick stick. After a long 4 hours in the sun, must say its still a bit early, and the heavy boat traffic today made the water a little churned up.

I managed one fish around 30cm, and spooked a few other small ones at my fav spot, point walter did not produce. Good to see some fish around already, hopefully a few more weeks and a quieter morning of evening will see some flatties turning up.

Ed.

As good as it gets in the Swan for sure. That's a great flattie there.

That's enough for me. Might head down to Burswood this afternoon to try for my first Swan river flatty. Caught a few bream down there but not fished there since the algal bloom. Might try some soft plastics. Perfect day for it.

That is a spectacular Swan River Flattie at 67cm, and armed with 3lb braid you cant be accused of not fighting fair. You gave her every chance to beat you at that weight.

Great effort, I would be "LOLling my guts out!!

I'm no expert

Being a bit of a pussy, I haven't been fishing much this winter, but have been doing my research to refine my angling.  Have watched alot of DVDs, checked alot of forums and spoken to old blokes about flathead.  They're not the smartest of fish but they have alot of energy and rush for 1m - 1.5m to grab a bait.  Steve Starlo reckons go for sandy drop offs to deeper water, stand in 300mm of water and cast to the 1.0 to 1.5m drop offs, a 1000 to 2500 reel, 7 ish foot graphite rod, 4lb braid with a 6 - 8lb flurocarbon leader, any sort of soft plastic, halco twisty or VB beer cap drilled and hooked and you'll get lizards.  Have tried and triumphed in my first attempt.  Used to go out with a 5000 reel with 10lb fluro line, 14lb mono and got nothing.  Gone light and loved it!  On the light gear, flathead have taken orange wriggler plastics from my pop's tackle box with a suicide hook poked through the guts of it (a bit pissed at the time) but lighter gear with the right retrieve (it's ferkin easy, check out flathead retrieves on the net, YouTube) has MASSIVELY changed my catch result and they're great fun on the light stuff.

WOW! monster flatty, last

WOW! monster flatty, last summer my biggest only just hit 50cm! Yep retrieval rate and technique is key. I tend to retrieve too quickly and have to keep correcting myself, when i slow down i always get the strikes.
