Agreed - been months since I have gone out past rotto and not seen one!

Had one land up on the bow a while back too, nearly got a hand to him!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

If you've seen tuna smash a flying fish or a mackie smash a bait meters in the air then you wonder whether they even need it. They can still smash em no problems. I saw a school of tuna smash flying fish completely out of the water at the Abrolhos. Absolutely amazing sight. Such precision, covering several meters out of the air before smashing the flying fish with pinpoint accuracy (just think, not only would they have to get their trajectory matching the flying fish moving, they'd have to compensate for it being above the water too).

Just as long as the sharks dont grow wings....

Yep, the Abrolhos smash-fests are a sight to behold - but I was more joking of what it'd be like to see a pile of big Marlin flying 100m through the air alongside your boat !

Flying fish FAIL

Tue, 2011-12-06 12:03

I saw the funniest flyng fish launch yesterday, after seeing quite a few out there I watched one gumby flying fish try to launch out of the wake and only managed a 3 metre air with a belly flop into the other side of the wake. Nothing like the 100m flights I am used to seeing.

Definitely there all year round but also definitely I would say there are more than normal in the shallower waters at the moment. Sadly nothing much chasing them by all accounts as yet.

Other noteable has been the lack of bird activity off the northern beaches (Ocean Reef and north) compared to a few years back. We hardly see a bird in the sky these days.
