Formosa Tomahawk Centre Cab - Opinions

G'Day Guys,

The Formosa range of boats has caught my eye for quite a while and i know 2 others also considering purchasing one and i'm chasing opinions from any owners or those who have been in one, preferably a 5.8m version. Looking to upgrade to a 6.2m Centre Cab version ready for Exmouth next year, going to look at a 5.5m one this Friday but opinions on how they ride and the performance with Xhp motor is appreciated.

Salesmen are good but they are really looking for a sale in the end and i won't have time to take one for a test drive.

Cheers lads.

yeah i'll get them to put all the holes in the boat, bit harder for my soldering iron to fix holes in ali. They do look good and are a simple layout, i don't need many bells and whistles

Not as beamy as most of the locally made boats. Try and get more fuel under the floor to increase your range cos no doubt once you have a boat big enough to do the Montes etc. you will wish you had built a bigger tank

I saw a comment in a review

I saw a comment in a review that they didn't have a sealed deck, and that the deck was ply. Is that the case in the model you were looking at?

2.45m beam on all models

Wed, 2010-05-26 10:11

2.45m beam on all models and fitted with a 225L tank when going to 6.2m otherwise 200L for the 5.8m which is good if fitted with a 130hp motor, fitted with a 150hp motor on the 6.2m i feel the range will be OK.

the deck on the Tomahawk is a carpeted ali deck and i'd say it's sealed, deck is self draining also.

670mm from the floor to the top of the gunwhale which is above my knee so that should be OK as well and i'm 190cm.

Just did a Montes trip with 2 other boats that had 220ltr tanks and both are looking at larger tanks or converting their kill tanks to get more fuel. Its better under the floor than in drums or jerry cans. My last boat was a 5.8 and that had 380ltrs underfloor

tomahawk

the tomahawk range are all plate Jamie, it's the standard formosa that have a ply deck. The tomahawk range is the more structually stronger plate range.

Bruce,

was looking at the 5.2 side console as an upgrade at the last boat show and talking to the lads at waterworld thay pretty much reckon you can customise your order and get what you want. Look like good boats and get good reviews but never been in one.....

Don't forget the Noble Boats range as waterworld stock them. Win the best boat of the year awards but can be pricey at teh 5.8m range...... was also looking ath the 5m side console and again waterworld indicated if you custom you can keep the price down and was looking at ~ $33000 for the rig.....

I'll check out the Noble's cheers Damo.

380L is MASSIVE, chances of me getting to the Monte's regularily is as much chance as me winning lotto so i'll ask the question on fuel capacity, i agree it's better under the floor then in jerries.

hull weight

Thu, 2010-05-27 07:28

Brucesta , i would look at the hull weight 660 kgs which might be a bit light on , my trailly 6.10 ( not a great example )  880 kgs which when travelling with a full tank 240 lts handles a lot better than when only half full , just something to consider, also if its 220 kgs lighter thats alot of alli missing from some where

Thu, 2010-05-27 08:57

I SAW THESE BOATS AT THE LAST BRISBANE BOAT SHOW AND THE DECK MAYBE ALI BUT THE ARE NOT FULLY WELDED THEY ARE ONLY STITCHED IN ...AND THEN TO WATERPROOF THE DECK THEY RUN SILICON OR SIKAFLEX AROUND THE EDGES ..TO ME THATS A BIT BODGY

tomahawk range is much

Fri, 2010-05-28 16:57

tomahawk range is much better than their original/classic model. I'd look into how their floor is sealed.

Plus, with any ali boat, make sure it's got some weight in it otherwise you'll cop a pounding.

Red would be nice. I loved the look of the 6.25m Noble in at waterworld which the salesman said i could have ready to go with a 150hp etec for 80k, thats getting out of my price range a little. Time will tell and there is plenty of time between now and april

150 sounds a little light on

Thu, 2010-06-17 16:51

150 sounds a little light on for a 6.25? I'd prob get that in a 5.8. But you're right about those Nobles, they looks pretty sweet.

the noble would struggle

Thu, 2010-06-17 22:33

the noble would struggle with the 150hp but the formosa not as much, rated to 200hp and 175hp respectivly.

some nice second hand walkarounds on the net at the moment too.... choices choices
