Freo/Swan boat fishing

Hey guys, im new to perth. My friend has a small 14ft firberglass boat and is willing to give fishing around the perth metro area a crack. Hoping to get onto a few squid, herring, gardies, bream and the likes. Any infomation on some good spots to try would be greatly appreciated. I'm used to good fishing up North but im desperate to wet a line, and dont mind what i catch. Will just be for sport, most likely catch and release as i wouldnt eat anything that comes out of the swan anyway... Any advice would be great please fellas :)

Cockburn sound

If you don't mind going out into the ocean a bit try Cockburn sound, drive around with a couple of squid jigs looking for weed beds, if you can't seem to find any squid put some burley in to get some herring action, the thrashing around of a herring or a whiting will bring the squid to you I have found, I caught a nice squid from a live whiting once!

There are tons of squid

There are tons of squid around at the moment and easily accesable by small boat.

Try heading off woodman point ramp, head just north of woodman point. Try area's from 3m to 5m deep, with weed and broken ground. You will find plenty, I find pink jigs seem to work the best.

No need to release either, you will have yourself a tasty little treat!!

Yeah squidding would be choice. I was at freo the other week and some guys were fishing off the fairy docking and so i just dropped the jig down once, 2 jerks and was on. They couldnt believe it, and i gave it to em as bait. One squid is too much hastle to clean. Iv got a nice 2.5 Yozuri orange jig that has proved to be the best so far. Even caught i nice sized squid back home in gero on the fall!

Plenty of choices...

As you can see/read there are plenty of squid around at the moment. Best place to start is to launch from Woodman Point boat ramp and head out and due WNW to the point there. Inside and out from the North side have been producing alot of squid.

Dont forget this time of the year, there are some snapper in the sound, after a stormy blow, they are not far from shore. Look south from Woodman Point and off the shoreline from there, as far south as the Grain Terminal in Kwinana.

If its too rough for the above, you can chase prawns as well. There's been plenty running out of the river the last few nights.
Launch from Leeuwin boat ramp and head upstream, you'll know where to go when you see all the boats with lights on.
