Fresh Fish Shop surprise

Just thaught i would share this. I went into the Mirrabooka shopping center the other day. there is a fresh fish shop right opposite woolies. thought i would have a quick squis to see what is the go in there. to my surprise there were heaps of different fish up for sale. some of which i wouldnt have a clue but were marinated is some sort of herbs and spices.nothing labled to say what they are or prices on most fish.

They had the usual stuff like snapper , goldband, tuna and many more, but out the front there were some tubs with the bread and butter species on ice, there were herring , gardies , skippy along with a couple of others. then i loked at another couple that had to my surprise Trumpeter and Scad (yellow tail) but one thing , all the fish in there looked real fresh.

Has anyone else seen these types of fish in a shop before as i certainly have never see Scad and trumpeter in one. not even down at the cannongvale fish market

Good to see other options out there! Takes a bit of pressure off of the more desirable species!

yeah but seriously, who eats

yeah but seriously, who eats yellowtail(scad) or trumpys? fine sell em but seriously what pressure is that taking of the better species... if your catching these fish to eat its no pressure to the local dhufish population i would think.

Met a Japanese guy down at the Eshed yesterday afternoon. He caught a few yellow tail and said that he and his wife eat the sushimi style. He said he ranked them as one of his favourites. We were quite surprised.

trumpeter

Yeah that shop always has trumpeter about $10 a kilo.  I remember Canrvonite saying they taste like iodine or something like that.

Not wrong about Mirrabooka being diverse but a handy little shopping centre

I always go check out

Tue, 2012-03-06 22:08

I always go check out Mirrabooka sq fish shop after the gym and last week i saw a fish that i didnt recognize. My closest guess was a very small, baby sambo, and when i proceeded to ask the attendant what species the fish was, she replied "mmph fish". I replied "sorry, i didnt get that, what is it?" she then replied "Mmph fish" i continued to ask another two times with the same response, then i stopped becuase it was getting awkward :)

just went and had another look at this place today. prices and species tags were up.

Trumpeter , would you believe $6-95 p/kg

yakkas (yellowtail) were advertised as baby mackeral. at $5-95 p/kg

marinated bits of snapper. didnt look like any snapper i have seen.

many more types of fish that you wouldnt expect to see.  another one was skipjack trevally only prob was some of them looked more like a dart than a skippy

Nothing wrong with all those

Nothing wrong with all those smaller species. Most people just can't be bothered with them. But like someone said they're catering to all. Used to catch Trumpeter as a kid and cook them up never did me any harm (I think) lol

Catering for the community

Fri, 2012-03-23 20:13

Those poor buggers over there wouldn't be able to afford the fuel to come up the road to Carramar and pay $80 per kilo for a demersal such as a dhue. Why do you think the Asians sit at the groynes and fill their buckets with anything and everything? These guys know how to survive and the bloke running that shop in Mirrabooka obviously understands this. Thank god most of us only eat fish occasionally otherwise there wouldn't be a fish left in the sea by now.

By catch

Fri, 2012-03-23 20:25

Most if not all the trumpeters and yellowtail scad would come from the Fremantle mulie boats by catch that normally would have been dumped but someone from the shop has seen a market for it and approached the fishermen to keep it and sell it to them for a small price.

Good on them for opening up a market for fish that most of us use as bait.

When chasing fresh mullet for bait I found it was cheaper to buy fresh fillets than chase after whole fish. Just laid them out with a thin layer of salt and whacked them in the esky for the fishing trip all prepared and raring to go.
