Furuno 585 issues

Hopefully someone has experianced similar problems and can give me some guidance. I have a furuno 585 bout 5 years old and lately it has been playing up by loseing image and/or depth recording often on a fishing trip. (Usually when i get to that secret spot). Have had the unit checked over once and the plugs replaced because some pins had broken, but still issues. Yesterday the guys checked out and passed the transducer, so its not that.

They are investigating if there is any updates for the unit.

One particular thing they found it does is when you change the range, it apparently impacts on the power to the unit.

Anyone else had similar issues?

Thks could be related, its mounted on top of the "dash" with clears giving protection from seaspray etc and overhead canopy from rain, but if clears are rolled up, some spray will get on the unit. Having said that unit is removed end of each trip and stored away from moisture. Currently unit is with friends at Fremantle marine who have it on test bench in pieces...hopefully they will quickly find the issue

willo latest news is my repair man has loaned me a new 587 until he can fix my 585 as its been in pieces on his workbench for sometime. He still thinks its a software upgrade issue. SO i went out today expecting wonderful things...not so...the new beast works as efficiently as the old, i cculdnt get depth reading even in 3 mts water. I did notice the power cable diesnt lock into the unit. It sits in fairly tight, but a slight touch and you lose power. I am thinkin maybe a pin in stuck in the power socket on the boat and stopping the power cable fully connecting with the unit, causing the issues.

Does anyone else have a furno sounder where the power cable actually "Locks" into the unit by twisting the retainer ring, cos mine wont at the moment.

Tomorrow i will examine the plug with a magnifi=ying glass to see if a pin is blocking one of the holes, then Monday i will go out again and this time take a spare transducer and see if it makes any differenc.

Mine is about 5 years old as well but mine kept turning itself off. I changed the power cable because it wouldn't lock into the unit but it turns out it wasn't the problem. I even rigged it up to a battery outside the boat to make sure it wasn't something to do with boat wiring but it still did it. In the end I had 2 separate places look at it and they both came to the same conclusion, the mother board was beyond repair. I've just purchased the new 587. Turns out the earlier 585's aren't as moisture proof as the 587's. I do recall now on a couple of ocassions on very cold mornings the 585 screen would get a slight condensation look on the screen internally and its probably this that has caused it.

Fingers crossed for you Tedalls that yours isn't the same problem.

Thanks that is interesting

Thanks that is interesting history.

Tried to secure power cable in yesterday so it wouldnt move, but no difference it kept power all day but no depth or image.

Just spoke to Freo marine again and they said there IS a free software upgrade for the 585 to fix some bugs (so Willo you may want to follow up on that), so they are doing that for me this week. Also reckons power cable maybe part of the issue, so we will try that next. He did however say if it wasent getting full power it would normally just shut down (sound familar Bluetonic?) but i guess like with most things, its not good to have inadequate or tempremental power to any computer style equipment and it also powers the transducer.

So plan now is to get power cable sorted, test with loaned sounder and hopefully my own software upgraded version and see it either works.

Only good thing with this is it gets me out on the water more often !!!!

Teddals, I just re-read your

Teddals, I just re-read your original post...I had missed the comment about 'extra' power draw when changing range.

My 585 (with a 1Kw M260 Transducer) used to lose bottom regularly...had it checked out by Taylors a couple of years ago, unit check OK, upgraded software but did not make any difference.

After a lot of trial and error, ended up figuring out that I only lost bottom if I ran the unit in "auto" depth range mode - run it in manual now with no issues.

Willo, it sounds like you have the same set-up as me and are experincing the same issues as I did - if you are not running in manual depth range, try that next time you are on the water.

Hope this helps - keen to hear how you guys end up.

Tue, 2013-01-29 23:27

Rewired mine back directly to the batteries instead of through a switch next to no voltage drop now, and topped up my wetbox was a bit low as well. Will be heading out later in the week and will see if this fixes the problem.

Power lead

Thu, 2013-01-31 07:45

Willo I put it up awhile ago but my near new 585 was showing low voltage on the screen most of the time and I went through all of the connections and switches , I have a very large power cable from the batteries to the control panel as well , but actually found that the furuno power lead supplied with the unit was where I was loosing the voltage , I cut the lead down to about 300 mm long and then soldered a heavier gauge wire through to the switch panel which solved all the issues , the lead looked in good order and the supplier couldn't answer why it happened

Thanks for all the comments,

Fri, 2013-02-01 08:48

Thanks for all the comments, Samson i have tried all sort of different settings and my reading tends to support your comment that it is better to run in manual mode anyway. I will definately betrying taht tomorrow. Ryangler, if you are talking about the socket on the power cable from the boat, my understanding is a new cable set u back bout $100 and can easily be fitted yourself (thats my plan for tomorrow collecting cable today), if its the socket in the back of the unit, i recently had mine replaced bout $200 including labour. The part was bout $60 and i saw the old one, seems an easy plug into the motherboard, so again reckon i could have done that myself. Both parts should be available from a Furuno dealer like Fremantle marine Electronics or Taylor marine.

So tomorrow is hopefully the big day. Plan to replace power cable, take boat out with two sounders (585 and 587), spare transducer and maybe even keep the original power cable attached. I reckon that covers all combinations. Of course i will need to go out fairly deep to give it a good test and may as well drop a line or two while i am out there!!

Will report back next week...happy fishing all

final word

Mon, 2013-02-25 06:12

Hi guys

finally sorted, eventually replaced the transducer and tested it with a temporary connection across the deck, worked fine and updated software on sounder gives really crystal clear image now. Yesterday we pulled out the old transducer and cable to find a cut in the cable bout 1mt in from the transducer before it went through the transom. This was obviously causing my problems with the old transducer, and given the cut only exposed some of the wiring probably the initial intermittant issues. So in summary, i needed the software upgrade i may have got away without the new power cable, but its better with it locked in and i definately needed the new transducer as once you damage the cable, its shot.

Now for some happy fishing, hope all others have sorted problems, but if you havent got the software upgrade, suggest you investigate anyway and check cables for damage if at all possible.

happy fishing

What soft ware update did you do

Mon, 2013-02-25 06:34

As the only updates I can find for furuno are for the gp7000  and the navnet gear which are for the GPS side of things not the sounder.cant find anything on sounder upgrade software .didnt think you could upgrade the soft ware on a furuno

Software

Fri, 2013-03-08 14:39

Short answer is i dont know, cos the guys at Fremantle marine did it for me, all i know is there was some upgrade to fix a few issues and it appears to have improved the image significantly. Suggest you give Mike a ring at Fremantle marine Electronics, he should still remember my sounder it was quite a headache.
