Furuno 587 - Advice on Furuno guru in Perth Area

 Hi Guys,

I have had a Furuno 587 teamed up with a TM260 1k transducer for around 2 years.

I have found the unit is very hit and miss with its showing in 50m plus.

I have changed through the TGV settings, gone between 1k to 600, ensured the bottom lock is small and played with the gain manual and auto. Its getting to the point where im thing of swapping the display to ensure the transducer is working correctly. I have also had an experienced Furuno 585 operator onboard checking the settings and also has him scratching his head.

Does anyone have any ideas or maybe even know of a business who help me out around the Perth area?

Cheers in advance guys.

Mate, these old Furuno units

Mate, these old Furuno units are totally bomb proof and need NO setting up to work great in 50m in full auto. I would say 95% of all issues are in the transducer install, where you get dirty aerated water across the face of the tranny.  I only ever had to play with settings once past 200 m with a 1kW tranny on m 587. Great unit.

Assuming the reading is good at rest in 50m, and only goes bad once you are moving, try dropping the transom tranny down a bit and angling it down at the back. If you are serious about fishing, throw the transom mount in the bin and buy a fairing mounted unit. If a sub 7m boat, a B744, if plus 7 m, get a B260 and modify the trailer to suit......yep, painful, but are you serious or not......

If the tranny is not working well at 50m at rest, then borrow a P66 el cheapo tranny and try that, it would work pretty good in 50 m....maybe your tranny is gone.

If you run it in factory auto settings and it is no good in 50m, I can almost categorically say it is NOT the settings that are the issue.

You dont need an expert.

Cheers

 Thanks for the info JohnF

Thanks for the info JohnF mate. Yeah its a weird one in the fact that sometimes it reads well in the 100's then most of the time not. In saying that in auto mode is the most accurate in the 100's. Ive said 50m plus because thats whenj it starts playing up but i fish mainly in the 100's.

I def think i will look closer at my Transducer and its mounting. A mate and i mounted it and it really hasnt had any adjustment since.

Thanks again for the info mate.

Cheers.

 Kangasif you are not getting

 Kangas

if you are not getting a good reading on auto in 50m at rest then you may be one of the unlucky ones that got a dud TM260. There was a batch of these about the era you are talking about. Although the issue was limited to 50KHz if I recall. If it’s a mix and match tranny then your cable to the head unit may be the problem, I had this issue.

However, take it to JN Taylor who can test it for you so you can at least rule out that the tranny is OK

Cheers

Definitely a transducer location issue

I run a 585 with a stock standard 600 watt tranny and can sound perfectly at speed in depths to 200 metres. I am trying to remember the name of the owner of "Ashram" at CPBA ......he is an absolute gun on Furuno so if anyone can remember his name (he presented at the snapper session held last year) give him a bell
