only in Oz would you see
only in Oz would you see produce displayed in such a disgustingly lazy manner.
Ive seen produce better displayed in remote markets in S.E Asia
And as for $44 per kg....yeah, feel free to tell them to fuck off from me.

Yep I agree
Displaying one of the oceans finest eating in that manner is certainly no way to promote the product.

Bycatch?
There is a small finfish netting I think in the sound , so maybe there a allowable by catch?
Reading some paper the other day I noticed gardies were comm netted in the sound throughout the 80,s and 90,s , totalling up to 40 tonnes peak year.
Then after that the catch verses time spent dropped rapidly , maybe somewhat ending up were we are now with the gardie ban?
Just saying it dont take a fisheries expert to see patterns developing were comm fisheries get good catchs of crabs , small fish , occys etc around the metro area
sometimes followed by fisheries taking a dive.
Not picking on pros , just questioning fisheries managers why this is so.

Well very poor presentation
But fresh . There is actually a few pro licensed squid fisherman for sound . Trying for one myself atm . I would never leave squid in that condition . Not hard gentle squeeze ( dead) milk ink out ( clean as)

Wholesale Local Squid Price
The price of local calamari at the wholesale auction for registered buyers (AJ Langfords Canning Vale - Kailis) varies between $20 and $30 per kilo depending on supply, size and demand. The retailer obviously needs a margin, and the price is generally set by what the buyer is prepared to pay.

I own a commercial squid licence
Allowed to fish for squid and finfish in the sound, only squid outside
All squid caught on standard jigs, no nets used
For me it's a bit of fun and tax effective, my skipper runs it and keeps all profit
He works FIFO so only fishes the 2 weeks that he is back home
We only take 50-100 kg each trip, sounds like a lot but it isn't, some big ones this season over 40cm hoods weigh up to 2 kg per squid
Offloading at Canning Vale Markets we get 17-20/kg
Seafresh Myaree/Claremont pay more and beg us for squid, they can't get enough
The general non-fishing population are entitled to buy and eat quality local product rather than frozen bleached imported squid tubes
Regarding presentation it is hard to make squid look good on display once the ink sac ruptures even if milked at time of capture
But anyone who knows anything about seafood can tell how fresh these are by the flourescent green eyes

Mate thanks for the write up. I'm in small business and hear exactly what you're saying. If you can't turn a profit no point opening the doors.
Everyone harping on about buying Australian product at the moment to stick it up the Chinese etc. But will whinge about something locally priced with no idea of overheads required to run a even a small business.

Interesting insight. I didnt know it happened so it clearly doesnt impact my fishing day which is the way commercial fishing should be in my opinion.

Good ol Perth...Never ceases
Good ol Perth...
Never ceases to amaze me how blindingly accepting sheeple are in this town. Theyd complain relentlessly at the rising cost of half a litre of soup like coffee yet still buy one in the morning and afternoon. Theyd never stop to think that if they didnt buy the coffee at that rate after a short while theyd find it wouldnt be sold at that rate. Simple economics.
Im old enough to remember when Dhuies were still sold in most fish store until it got to over the $90 mark and people just stopped buying it.
I sent that pic above to friends in the Eastern States, NZ, and Italy this morning and the ones that didnt reply with shock replied with laughter..
All for a species that spawns in the millions

not everyones
not everyones complaining..... and as for presentation being better in remote SE asia fish markets, having spent some time in SE Asia, presentation is the last thing i would be worried about when buying seafood there!
I dont think fish is overpriced at all -note i am not saying it is affordable- if you take the amount a pro spends on boat, govt related expenses, insurances, crew, gear, fuel (the list is exhausting) , i think you will find they are running a high risk low margin business....

We've had that experience at a few places locally and my nephew almost choked on a squid ring that was almost elastic band like at Hillarys.
Best (freshest) squid ive ever eaten was in South Australia, Barcellona and Newcastle on the Central Coast

Well that would be due to cooking practice and unlikely the product, as we all know being avid fishermen on here overcook squid and it turns to rubber.

You sound very sure. Were you in the kitchen ?
Anyone who fishes for squid can tell if the squid they have bought is fresh or old whether it is cooked or not and i can tell you categorically mate...the squid rings that day were old.

I personally don't mind
I personally don't mind paying top dollar for high quality seafood, although I'd rather catch it myself! There are things I like to eat that it isn't possible or practical to catch so I just keep a lookout for quality at a fair price. Like pelagicyachts said above, the costs for a pro are significant so it wont be cheap for the consumer.

Sorry I'm the same I didn't
Sorry I'm the same I didn't mean it to sound as though I was complaining about the price. I pay over 60 a kilo for rankin fillets that's the main fish I buy from fish shops and am happy with that my misses wouldn't but I refuse to eat any fish she would buy I prefer Aussie fish.

Squid
$44kg, bargain.
i pay $48kg plus for quality steak, quality prawns are well up there too, people are paying $25kg for bait occy so $44kg for fresh squid is more than fair.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !
