Gear for Denham

My oldest boy is begging me to take him to Exmouth but I don't have the ability to tow the boat up that far and we've settled on Shark Bay and are aiming for June and staying in Denham. Hopefully I'll be able to chuck a few carcases in the town bin

The heaviest combo I have is my PE 3 Type J with 5000 Biomaster and a PE 3-4 Monster Mesh with an 8000 Stradic. Lachie has a bulletproof 15-24kg Penn Mariner with Penn 850.

Am I going to be outgunned up there?

Gear is perfect Frost, float mulies out with that Biomaster set up. The other set ups good for demersal action. Just go heavy rigs and leaders.

Damn, so need to find another excuse lol.

I also got my PE2 Catalina with Biomaster 5000. That's my go to drift bait/floater/placcy rod and I landed a decent tiger shark with it.

Cheers for the input all

Sounds fine to me Frosty. Further north and you'd need heavier to escape the sharks. Maybe a cull...........

The most important thing is to keep fishing the same spot regardless of how many fish you lose to sharks, trips north are simply too expensive not to bring at least 80kg of fillets home.

Why not fish shark bay and then head to exmouth break the trip up you won't regret it exmouth is amazing i towed my leeder 650 from coral bay to perth in 1 sting but either way shark bay is awesome fishing aswell your gear should be no dramas for the fish but dont be afraid to skull drag as the sharks can be a real pain

Hah. Nah, he was but now reckons Brodie is a douchebag.

My Mrs lived in Exmouth for 3 years as a 7y old kid straight off the boat from Scotland and she's told him aboit it since he was a baby.

One day but my tow vehicle is a work car and I had to apply for an exemption to travel outside of the allowed region (S of Kalbarri) and cover all fuel costs (sleep easy Rob) as it was. I reckon Exy would have been pushing the friendship too far.

Sun, 2021-02-21 18:59

Should be fine . Just set the drag . Coral bay is only a few hours more then only a couple more to exy.  I have fished Denham before and much prefer coral bay . Just my opinion I would go just a bit further

I would agree Russ although to be fair I've done plenty of fishing at Exy and only trip to Shark Bay. Ticked many bucket fish off around Exy and the Mackerel Islands

Go hit Up Dirk Hartog.

Sun, 2021-02-21 19:41

Get a good weather window ( Mwaaa waa wa... ) you can always zap across and have some fun near Steep point. Just don't get complacent, you may be in a protected water way but I've eaten shit there many a time.

We fished with 10-15lb outfits in the bay, the only time you probably wish you had something heavier is if you come across some goldens or cobia. Only went up to pe3 out the back of Dirk

Awesome mate, looked like a cracker trips and that definitely whets the appetite for heading up. My oldest boy has already started writing down the fish he plans to catch… I’ve created a monster.

Do you have any sandwhiting spots you'd like to share? It’s been more than three years since Marinebaby posted up any of his catches so I’m going to drop him off a few packs of sweet white meat.

I do most of my fishing

Mon, 2021-02-22 15:28

I do most of my fishing there with a 5k stradic with 30lb line and only have issues if a tiger grabs it.

A word of caution, and it may be wasted, do your research well ahead of time.

I've seen so many visit there thinking there's fish everywhere but that isn't the case and you really need some points of interest to go as there's a lot of desert in the sound.
