Getting Old (and grumpy) - Anchor winch help

HI all
Getting to old to keep pulling anchors as the back and other joints are hurting.
Was thinking now is the time to spoil with a winch.
I have a Trailcraft 5.4.
So question - what type and then what anchor.
Was thinking a sarca is it will sit under the bow sprit but would appreciate opinions.
I searched but couldn't get a specific answer as to what will be the best for this particular craft.
Looking forward to some input.
Cheers
Neels

EDIT: Also what $$ damage am I looking for - but still might be cheaper than Physio/Drs etc bills for the back and bloody tennis elbow!!

I use a Lewmar V700. Small and compact, does a great job. Not had any issues. I'm only using chain, no rope.

Im using a Sarca with it, but my previous plow was just as good.

Neels

I had a 540 traily, and looked at a winch but ended up upgrading.....still wish I had the traily for inshore stuff.....my back doesn't though.

I have a vertical Quick winch on my Boston, looks the goods but the drop into the anchor well is not enough and someone has to go up front to guide the rope around in circles or else it jams, which is a pain.

I would recommend a winch drum, they are fool proof. My mate put one on a 570, works well apparently.

Love my Traily despite the rough ride but decided on a ali around Dampier searching new ground with Bommies always a threat.
Learned to love the ruggedness. Down here haven't ventured far off but don't need to as I would rather eat whiting than anything else down this way. Don't drift for them but anchor and burley bomb so need to pull the anchor a few times, which is now a PITA, I mean back. Air cushioned seats make the bumps a little better though.
I was thinking Drum anyway, but open to any suggestions as I have never looked at, or needed an anchor winch.

Try.

Try getting a new stronger younger deckie to pull the anchor.
Cheaper than the alternative & hopefully pays their way. Haha

My Deckie

"Deckie" is almost always the other half, and her back suxs more than mine. Bloody good at everything else deckie wise but I wouldn't trust her on the front of the boat.

I put on a lewmar

But would comment that whilst it is brilliant its weight on the bow changes the boats trim by a significant degree, it is linked to  large sarca and holds bottom brilliantly

Winches

Neels, you'll never look back mate. Sarcas are very good, I had a No.2 on my old runabout and now have the next size up, just make sure it will sit in the bowsprit and "self launch" when you take the tension off the chain. I have a Lewmar Profish and it is excellent, but my boat has an enormous rope locker under it and this is the key for them to work. If the locker doesn't hold all of the rope / chain with at least 300 clearance between the top of the chain and the bottom of the winch, then go for a drum style.

Chiropractor as a new site sponsor?

Mon, 2016-04-04 19:39

With all the posters in these threads complaining about dodgy backs, maybe I should become a site sponsor. Even better, maybe I should sell my boat and become a deckie, pull the anchor and look after the skipper's back in between hauling in the craypots and big fish from 300m down. I think I currently work one day per week purely for my fishing and boat addiction.

Anchor

Thu, 2016-04-07 07:45

That's one of the things I really like about my dual console boat - open the windscreen and walk straight out the front to pull the anchor

Whichever one you will not Regret it.

Thu, 2016-04-07 06:55

You will be happy no matter which one you purchase, I chose the Profish as I wanted a 100 meeters of rope. Greatest thing for me is if you want ot move ten meters to the right you just push a button, then move. Whereas you tell the deckie or yourself that and you get really mean looks.

Stress Free NG Mini Freefall Anchor Winch

Thu, 2016-04-07 11:35

Got one of these on my 5.5 Surtees. Nearly didn't get this option when I purchased the boat... Bloody glad I did! Has an added feature of free fall (flick of a switch) to get to the bottom quicker when anchoring in deeper water. Aquasports in Midland can source them through a Welshpool wholesaler.

Last pull of the anchor

Thu, 2016-04-07 15:15

I went out fishing today and caught my first legal size dhufish and 4 undersizers as well. Also scored a squid on a hook which was intended for a dhuie. A few small pinkies as well.

My Savwinch 1500W arrived today and is getting installed on Monday, so I have no intention of ever lifting that bloody heavy anchor and chain on my BarCrusher 670 ever again. Not sure how many times I've been tempted to cut the rope instead of lifting the anchor and today was no exception, especially in the chop and wind this morning behind 5 Fathom Bank.

The 1500's can hold 100m of line + chain and have a variable speed fast fall, or two speed fast fall option nowadays - it lessens the likelihood of overrun in the freefall anchor winches (apparently)

Think I may take a few bourbon and colas out on my next fishing trip and have a drinking game - 1 can of Wild Turkey every time Savwinch hoists the anchor.
