Getting Spiked

About 3 weeks ago i got a small burn on my thumb while removing a tray from the oven. Just a tiny blister and nothing to worry about.

Around 1 week ago that small blister was really giving me grief. Felt like a pain just on the edge of a nerve.

Yesterday i cut the dead skin away from the area and put a plaster on the tiny exposed area of new skin.

Last night it was annoying me still, so i started to cut the last of the dead skin away from around the edge, and out popped a bit of bone?? WTF..

Looks like this has been in my thumb from mid April when i was fishing in Shark Bay.. Got spiked in the thumb while scaling a Pinkie..

Yeah i'm sure it would have stayed there un-noticed if i had not got got a burn on top of it.

Strange how the body copes with foreign bodies.

Kicked a herring

Fri, 2015-06-12 15:09

Back into the drink last year, got spiked in the process. A few weeks later, I noticed the sore hadn't healed and proceeded to pull out a 15mm long herring spike.

Serves me right for kicking a poor herring!

Yeah, I did too at Peaceful bay. Most agonising thing Ive ever had. Made getting shot in the knee with a speargun seem insignificant.

Nah, I reckon I do

Sat, 2015-06-13 20:47

Had a tender thuumb years ago when i was a deckie, gutting a lot of snapper, alway sore and smelly around the nail. Gave it an accidental whack one day, hurt like hell, pus coming out of the quick, and whats this? Something poking out of the quick along the nail, dragged it out with a knife, snapper spine at least 15mm long.

But the best one was only a few years back, I could feel a lump in my middle finger between first and second joionts, was annoying me. Went to doc, he x-rayed, and I had spines in three fingers, ninety degrees across the fingers.  He had to cut them out under local, they were all encased in fibrous material which he said was the bodies reaction to a foreign object. Bloody bluebone...

Stings spikes etc:

Mon, 2015-06-15 19:59

Has any one been stung spiked whatever by a stingray. I don't know of anyone who has and I'm just wondering how bad the wound is and what can be done to mitigate the pain if you are out on the ocean, and please no answers like urinate on it. Did that when I got a cobbler spiking to my thumb, all I got was a thumb stinking of urine and a bad look from the triage nurse at the hospital when I got there seeking pain relief.

My uncle stood on a sting

Mon, 2015-06-15 20:14

My uncle stood on a sting ray at a place called seal beach in california, went right into his heel and he said it was one of the most agonising pain he'd felt. It took us about 35-40 mins to get home and all the way home he was gritting his teeth and cursing coz it hurt so much. We called 911 and when they finally arived they told him to soak it in hot a possible water he could take with a little salt in it. It seemed to work too. That was like 20 years ago and i remember it so clearly. Fuck getting stabbed by a sting ray i reckon

Stingray and cobbler

Tue, 2015-06-16 06:16

Been hit by both, once with small stingray through a thumb trying to unhook it and many times by cobblers trying to get them out of nets, the pain level is the same, bloody high. Very hot water is the solution, it kills the proteins in the venom.
Be prepared for blood because with both you bleed like there is no tomorrow.

same as john , stingray and cobbler , both are painfull and the rays make you bleed alright
as mentioned , trick is to stick it in a bucket or something , add hot water , as hot as you can stand it and sit back with a beer and panadol

, the relief is amazing lol

Whilst prawn drag netting

Tue, 2015-06-16 08:11

years back in South perth caught a whole school of tiny cobbler babies. I was emptying the net and felt a prick on my left index finger. I looked at the site where I got stung and saw a nice prawn. There was no pain. Decided to play a prank on the mates and did a Hollywood acting like I was in real agony and trouble. They all panicked and started packing up frantically, and I couldnt curtail myself and burst out laughing. I was in the water and everything that was launchable was thrown in my direction.

But then suddenly a pain started in stung finger, and within a coule of minutes it felt like my whole hand was on fire. Obviously no matter how much I complained nobody was paying any attention to me. I had to pack up the car in agony, and drove to RPH. That is when they believed me. I hot water bath and a ring block with local anaesthetic totally numbed the finger and despite the needles hurting like "F" it was one of the best feeling the pain disappearing.

Learned 2 important lessons - Cobblers are to be avoided because the pain is incredible and FFS never cry wolf.

Thanks guys for your replies

Tue, 2015-06-16 12:06

I was just interested as to what the pain level was, and going on the replies I'm damn sure I'll make as sure as I can I don't get to experience one. The sting of the cobbler was something like you only ever want to experience once in your life and is best given a miss if at all possible.

I remember the cobbler sting

Tue, 2015-06-16 16:19

I remember the cobbler sting being so bad that I had my foot in a bucket of water that was so hot that I couldn't put my other foot in there for more than a second. Basically had nanna constantly boiling the kettle for me to keep the temperature up.

Everytime I go chasing a crab into a weedy area all I can think is please don't let me step on a cobbler.

Happy moments

Tue, 2015-06-16 17:21

I have been told there is a small fish called "happy moments" and the sting from one of these fish is something that will not be forgotten for a long long time. Does anyone know the correct name for this fish, I haven't heard of anyone being stung by one of these down my neck of the woods (Mandurah) but it would be handy to look up and see what they look like once I can find the right name for them.

Just as a note I always have a spray bottle of "sting goes" in the boat and this works very well on flatty spikings.

Called Black rabbitfish

Fri, 2015-06-19 08:09

"Siganus fuscensens" - called Happy moment because after a spike you get a few "moment" of euphoric feeling, and then hell breaks out. Not as bad as cobbler stings from some that has had both, but still not fun.
