Hey just a question, Your boats about 6.6m right? How much does it weigh roughly and what do you tow it with. We were going to tow the Trophy with a 2006 Toyota Prado that can tow 2.5 Tonnes with a 3.5 Tonne tow bar. Do you rekon the trailer needs electric brakes?

Picking up the boat tonight and ill put heaps of pics up so you can see the baby in more detail. it's sitting in my driveway so heavy it put a dent in the lawn sooooo wide would be 8'5" which is 2.59m. Whats the legal towing width for WA? Its so awesome huge cabin, table, tanks and cockpit is massive with enclosing clears. Will put some pics up in the morning i just got back at 9!!!!!

So pumped. Anyone going out this weekend?

Tue, 2011-11-08 21:38

is the maximum beam measurement before a wide load permit is needed, the permits are not expensive and there are a couple of travel/tow restrictions but all in all not to restrictive. I'd sure be happy with a tub like that - well done.

Tue, 2011-11-08 21:38

if it's over 2.5m width you need a permit and if it's over 2T total weight you need electric/hydralic brakes, that 35K bargin might just cost you a little more. You might find 150hp struggle to get out of the hole too, seems vary minimal for HP on the back of such a big and heavy boat.

SHEIIIIT its about 2.4t all

Wed, 2011-11-09 07:42

SHEIIIIT its about 2.4t all up depending on fuel because its a 300L fuel tank. I dont think it needs electric brakes, one mate suggested it but about 4 others said you don't need them- they all know lots about boats and hulls etc. With a tow permit isn't it that you can only drive between 10am and 2pm?

Motor runs it all right according to the previous owner, its got a big 4 blade prop i think...

I rekon what ever i put into the boat i will get back when the time comes to sell it. Theres still a few little jobs to do but eventually it will enhance the final look.

Pics going up now!

Bwahaha.

Money spent on a boat is just that. You don't get money back you spend on a boat. Best to get used to that early.

Mate's opinions aren't really that useful when you're arguing with the insurance company or the cops after you just killed someone when your trailer just pushed you through an intersection.

Wed, 2011-11-09 08:43

That model Trophy and motor weights 1556 kgs, and with a Trophy supplied trailer it weights 2009 kgs. ( check your own trailer weight)

The width of the boat is 2.46 metres and width with a Trophy trailer is 2.51 metres.( check width of your trailer)

Trophy's recomended package for that boat is fitted with the 150hp motor.

Fuel capacity is 326 litres

Nice boat.

Meaure it and do away with speculation.

The hard facts are if it is over 2.5m width it will need a tow permit.

Above 750kg and up to 2000kg you need overide brakes acting on one axle

Above 2000kg needs brakes on both axles and a break away braking system.

Still a very nice boat. Enjoy!

What is a break away braking system. The current ones are when the car brakes, the trailer pushes forward on the main beam and causes the brakes to be activated.

Thanks

i think you'll find overwidth

Wed, 2011-11-09 10:27

i think you'll find overwidth permits are daylight hours so 6-6 and you'd be safe. Best to check your rego forms to be sure, thats what the insurance companies will go off. I hope you took it for a test drive mate and had it checked over before purchasing mate it doesn't sound like it. No one likes to see some one have the wool pulled over thier eyes and then find out they have to make some fixes to thier rig, be it the trailer, boat, motor or car. TBH i can't say i've seen Trophy owners up here with overwidth signage on the car/boat, actually there are probably plenty of import boat owners that don't and probably should but small issue that one, the big one is the brakes, as starbug has written it'll definantly as a minimum have the override brakes on one axle, take a photo of the trailer towing end and the compliance plate and we'll soon see if you're OK, to convert a trailer to electric overide brakes with breakaway system will cost some big dollars, probably looking at 2-3K total.

In the end mate have fun with it and get stuck into some good fish young fella!

One of the other owners has upgraded his axles and brakes from the ones supplied by Avante and probably Trophy, although his is diesel and a bit heavier.

I think the hull size up from the 2050/2150 is much wider, and seriously into the daylight-only tow category.

Daylight hours are probably

Wed, 2011-11-09 20:10

Daylight hours are probably what i would do anyway. I don't drive to holiday destinations during the night either even without the boat! Rego forms were tripple checked with the boat, and we rang up the police to check that the boat wasn't stolen, or any debt was still to be paid. Police check was clear so we went for it. Being a slightly neglected boat was always going to reduce the price of the boat and i new i would have to do work to make it right.

Ill take a picture or two of the trailer and put them up so you guys can check it out if you want!

Where should i take the pictures? (lol i'm very under done on my trailers and have no idea about parts and stuff sorry) What areas of the trailer? probably the wheels?

Sorry for my inexperience!!!

Ben

I really appreciate all of the help from this site i think you guys that make it up are amazing!!!

Our boat weighs 1.6t and has override brakes on one axle.

A recent trip to Greenhead almost ended before it started with a crash stop on the freeway ( car in front had no brake lights).

Without those trailer brakes we would have been parked inside the car in front.

I've towed my rig rather breifly without the electric trailer brakes and wouldn't dream of hitting the road without them working. The weights the guys are giving you are probably omitting a few things. 1550 or so for hull, 250kg for engine, 350kg of fuel , 450-500 kg trailer plus fishing gear and other little stuff will put you well into 2 ton territory. It's been a good pick up mate, spend a bit of time and care and just make sure you're legal.

Trailer

Thu, 2011-11-10 12:51

If the trailer was $12,000 then it would be a pretty good bet that it would have the electric brake-away system.

If not...then I would be asking what the $12K was for.

I have had several boats that were officially over 2 tonnes. A big old Haines which was 2.7 tonne and a Seaswirl Striper that was easily 2.4 tonne. Both had electric brakes and gave you some serious peace of mind when you planted your foot on the brake pedal. It pulled up bloody quick. Plus the added advantage of the incar controller means that you can manually overide the brakes if you start to get speed wobbles or just want to make sure the brakes are actually working.

I have had a few boats that were unofficially over 2 tonne (probably 2.2 tonne fully loaded) and I can tell you that you had your heart in your mouth when someone pulls in front of you and plants on the skids.

Very nice tub by the way.

Brakes

Thu, 2011-11-10 12:59

Judging by the photo you dont have the electric override brakes... it has the standard manual system with the incorporated hand brake lever.

I had a look on the Papas site and they do have a trailer for around $12k which suits your size boat (up to 3.4 tonne)  and it would have to have electric brakes to have that rating.

Have a chat to your dad about it and make sure you dont have your wires crossed in regards to what you actually have.

Mate for all intents and

Thu, 2011-11-10 13:51

Mate for all intents and purposes we have the same boat. Mines an '08 hull 2002 WA with a 175 on it. Trailer I have which is made by Karavan is complied to carry a maximum of 2680 kg or simular combined mass. So boat, gear, trailer and everything but the kitchen sink must not exceed 2600 odd kg. Mine came with a Hydrastar electric/hydrauic brake setup and some flash calipers and rotors that the previous owner spent upwards of $5000 on.

From what I can see in the pictures, and that's not much, I'd say it's a simular Karavan trailer. Any trailer over 2000kg must have brakes that can be operated from the drivers seat ( worded something like that ) and a break away system to be legal.

 http://www.hydrastar.com.au/brake-actuators/hydrastar-hba-series/

Edit:

My trailer comes in at bang on 2.5 wide, I understand the permit is only required if towing a load exceeding 2.5m correct ? Boat is 2.48m wide !!

Nice tub mate and I'm sure you'll have heaps of fun in it.

Right, from my understanding, the package from the states comes in at a tad over 2.5m but apparently it's the wheel arches, not the boat that takes it over. I have a 2007, 2002 Trophy WA and I bought it through Avante here and from what I can gather they did the mods on the trailer to bring it under the 2.5m. I have never had any issues and funny enough, I used to tow it with a Prado and had no dramas. Nowadays, I tow it with a 200 Series and that's better but there was nothing at all wrong with the Prado. Before I ordered mine I stopped in on someone that had the same boat parked up in his driveway, he towed his with a Commodore of all things!!!

Your outboard will be fine I think, the maximum rated HP for the hull is only 175. I put a 175 Opti on mine.

You will have a great time catching fish in your new boat as they are a very capable offshore tub!!

Did you have electric brakes when you towed it with the Prado?

Sorry no pictures of the brakes today fixing up the anchor and all the damage that had been caused to the bow sprit. 10m of chain so whenever the boat moved, the chain rubbed on the hull and put holes and chips everywhere :(

overwidth?

Fri, 2011-11-11 21:49

note that the width of the boat has no bearing on the trailers rego-ie just because Papas or Avanti modified the trailer to be under 2.5, means nothing about the actual boats beam. It is specifically NOT checked just the same as a box trailer isnt rego'ed full of sand etc.

It is impossible to register ANY vehicle that is over 2.5 meter except perhaps on a "one off permit" I believe.

Id suggest the old fashioned way of laying a tape over it at the widest point (midships?) as a copper mate tells me thats the second thing they do in any towing accident. First is weighing it.

Nice rig by the way!-only downside for me though is since having a TCraft, I wouldnt have a boat without a full boarding platform on the back for diving/snorkelling swimming etc

Yeh k will do

I've had trailcrafts before and they're good boats. Were looking at the 6.1m trailblazer and 6.4m and 6.6 malcom douglas. How does yours go?

goes great, very stable but like most plate boats they can ride hard.

Upside is being ally and quite tough you can knock them around without fear-great for places such the islands where the jetties are quite harsh and scraping the coral or beaching on the sand can be expected.

THey are at a pretty good price now though since moving to China-very interested to see what the build is like, not that I intend buying a new one.

From memory at the boat show the 6.8 with a 200 opti was about $50K

Not really sure what you are trying to get at, but the boat is well under and it is the trailer that is over. Hence the trailer mods.

simple-he only said the trailer is 2 inches wider than the boat. I said that doesnt necessarily tell you how wide the boat is. The boat (or any "load") has no bearing on registering a trailer at all.

Plus he said "the bottom of the boat" which also doesnt mean anything as its the widest part of the load that determines overwidth, the photos show this to be a long way from wider than at the shear. If that trailer is over then the boat is by a country mile.

Sorry but Im guessing now that yours and his boat are one and the same, however your post seems to read as though you havent measured it either??

As a Trophy owner I told him what he needed to know. If anything the trailer is over, if it isn't all good because the boat ain't!! Might be a good idea to refer to the manufacturers website before one makes an uneducated statement.

sorry if I have upset you somehow Steve-unintentional.

But (I may have missed it) I havent seen the model designation of either yours or his to search for that, and why do I need to?

At the end of the day it matters not a bit what the manufacturers say-its a tape measure that will tell the story.

I too have been down that path.

Sorry my way of expressing my findings were poor. 2cm from each side from where the hull sits over the trailer. where the V meets the vertical side.

Sorry :(
