 Process of elimination,

Process of elimination, SIMPLE OBVIOUS AND CHEAP stuff first!

Check your battery first, could be near flat and not charging.

If it is cranking slow it is electrical-battery, earths, dodgy cable or starter motor.

In this case its stopping so unlikely to be starter itself.

Less likely but a possibility is it has over heated and partially seized but that is a long way down the list to check.

Easy way though (you dont say what size it is) take cover off and spin flywheel, should turn free about 1/4 turn then hit compression.

Agree with Rob

Thu, 2017-12-21 12:01

Agree with Rob above. If you have a multi meter try clamp the multimeter probes to the battery. Might show more than 12 volts with no load but when you crank it if it drops below 10v then you might have a cell knackered in your battery.... That's what it sounds like to me anyway.

If it stays above 10v when cranking then do the same test at your starter motor which will rule out cables.

Where are you located? and where did you get the crabs haha

 Hows your oil

Thu, 2017-12-21 12:07

 Hows your oil condition/level?

Did you get any over temp warnings?

Possibly got to hot or lack of lubrication causing it to pick up in the bore or bearings. Once cooled down for a few minutes it may have released before going again but wouldnt have run for long like you experienced.

Slow roll over may be excess friction caused by damage to bores or bearings, other than starter or battery not many reasons for slow roll unfortunately.

Could try take plugs out and roll over by hand should be smooth and roll fairly easily.

And check oil for metal filings

 Like above if battery

Thu, 2017-12-21 12:09

Like above if battery average or even ok check alternator charge rate if able. A bad battery wont always cause you to stall at speed but no charge will

have a look at the leads.

Thu, 2017-12-21 14:26

have a look at the leads. may not have spark getting through.

get some fresh fuel going through and see if it fires. may be dirty fuel that went through

 If the battery is not

Thu, 2017-12-21 17:28

If the battery is not charging yes it could.
What is the voltage when its not trying to start?

And have you put it on charge then tried starting?

Battery might read 12.5 with no load, put a load on it and it drops to 10. something = battery cactus.

how old is the battery.

You tilted the motor up than down, and it started.than went no where,I'd say some muck or hard oil deposits have come unstuck and doesn't go after deign down.plus the battery problem.

Thu, 2017-12-21 20:49

I cant really make out what your saying, you put the boat battery in your Mercedes?
Or the car battery in your boat and "died slowly while driving started again. Died again while coughing and spluttering nowslow rolls and won't start"

Car battery in the boat

Thu, 2017-12-21 21:07

put the battery from the car in the boat still won't start the way it stopped while operating yesterday ( a cough and splutter) suggest it isn't the starter motor. The only glimmer of hope before I settle on some sort of seizure is the volt drop while trying to start...might leave it tonight and sober up a bit haha

Do you know where the engine

Fri, 2017-12-22 06:18

Do you know where the engine earth points are? Dodgy earth could cause your issues, bolt could have come lose and ontact come away, tilt up brought it back into contact before vibrating away again. Should be one on the block and maybe one on the head aswell. Running on partial contact or through alternative earth will cause a slow roll on starter and damage smaller earth  cables not designed to carry starter load

A battery dropping to 10v is normal during starting due to current draw of starter. Anything above 9v will not cause any issues. My experience is cars but basic principles of boat motor starting system will be the same. Someone with more boat mechanic experience may correct me

Sounds like an electrical

Fri, 2017-12-22 07:33

Sounds like an electrical problem to me, had similar happen in a car in the middle of nowhere ~11pm between QLD & NSW back in the late 80's (no mobile phones back then), passer-by organised a sparky in the next town for me to come out, from memory I think it was the alternator (could be wrong), plus a big call out bill.

Could also be what others said re dodgy connections, earth etc. No doubt/hopfully gunna be something simple you'll do a Hommer D'oh! over, rather than going to the trouble of stripping her down only to later find it electrical.

If me, wanting to get the tub back in the water asap for holidays, call a mobile auto sparky, might find one in your area on Gumtree.

Fuel

Fri, 2017-12-22 10:57

You say you changed tanks and it died 10mins later? Stale fuel or water or goo of some sort. Starts on Ether spray so for sure fuel related.
