Leading on from Randall's post who do you all think is the greatest player of all time?
My Pop used to say it was hands down Barry Cable but I always thought he had a certain bias seeing as he was his colts coach for Narrogin Imperials but after doing some research recently I genuinely feel that if he had gone to the VFL in his prime then he'd have given Lethal a run for his money.
The issue is that we had three leagues and guys like Billy Walker and Ray Sorrel will never get the recognition they deserve and if Toddy didn't do his knee or Juddy's groin didn't give in then we wouldn't even need to ask this question.

Hands down
The best of all time for me was Wayne Carey. Sure his off field antics were questionable (hey all the greats were at one point or another) but for me he is the greatest to ever play. You don't get the nickname the King for nothing.
for the record I am a pies supporter so certainly not a bias opinion on this one.

Gary Ablett Sr...
...wasn't his nickname "God"? Surely that's higher than a King! And before anyone mentions the dead hooker in the hotel room, that can't be worse than banging a teammate's missus, can it?

Stephen Michael
Stephen Michael was an absolute gun, shame he didn't take up the offers to play VFL as it was then to show his talents on the big stage. From what I remember it was family pressure that made him knock back the many chances to play over east.
Watched him play state games against the best Vics had to offer and taught them a football lesson

Probably not in the same
Probably not in the same categoru as the goats, but as a point of interest my father in law coached phil narkle when he was playing thirds for swans.
Phil played the first half of the season in the thirds and won their b&f, the second half in the seconds and won their b&f, and the last game in the league and got three sandover votes... not a bad season!

As well as coaching my old man before he went down to Collie.
I remember listening to the Swannies on the radio with Dad as a youngster and all you'd hear was Narkle, Narkle, Narkle... there were two of them though, both brilliant.

Living in Bazzo then
and with Bill Skirowski as a neighbour had to listen to the Swannies. There where so many greats there - Narkle's, Stan (the man) Nowotny, Leon Baker, Mike Richardson, Simon Beasley and Big bad Ron Boucher etc etc.
The Narkle boys come over to Perth Bayswater Rugby Club to play touch, and they weren't bad at that at all.
As for the GOAT - "The Pipe" Polly Farmer IMO.

Another SDFC legend!The old
Another SDFC legend!
The old man played against him through juniors and reckons he was the size of a man when he was 12 and used to belt anyone that got in his way and was happy to finally play with him once they made colts until he realised he had to do training drills with him 2x per week.
Dad also played school cricket with Wayne Clark and reckons he'd rather have played against him rather than face him in the nets every week.

Darrel Baldock for the Saints was the best player I ever watched, and absolute genius,
Polly wasn't bad, revolutionised ruck work,

WAAAYYYNE
He was an amazing mark and kick. Changed the way the game was played.
few highlights here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVFeeJkCTX4#t=276.684467
Check out footage of Jackovic vs Carey and Carey used to mark some of the time whilst being held down and in a headlock.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS7w7O3KrAI
note - this is Carey at his worst.
Imagine what he would do with the rules geared for forwards today!
He was inspirational regularly and a Carey goal would deflate the whole opposition team and lift his.
One thing not well remembered were his exquisite skills in the wet.
Buddy Franklin is a similar comparison today in his ability to swing a game, and is better on the run, but doesn't have the marking power or captaincy that Carey had.
And let it also be said that he was an absolute tool in his choices at that time, very disappointing.
I got into AFL football and switiched from following the Eagles after loving watching Carey dominate under lights on Friday nights as a teenager.

I do have to admit that I loved watching North in the 90's and bought a North jumper for footy training back in the 1995 as I liked the colours better than whatever horrendous jumper the Eagles had at the time.
Prize for anyone that can guess what number I had on the back...

Was a sensational player in 1995 too #31 but my guess is shinboner of the centurey #11 Glenn Archer - what a champ.
How'd I go?

AFL
Always very hard to compare the greats in different times. Almost a different game now as well. I had the pleasure and mis pleasure of playing with and against a lot of the blokes mentioned. Stephen Michael didn't have normal skin felt like steel, and The big roo was just a bit scary at times!! I used to love watching big forwards dominate a game not the running players of today. Wayne Carey was a very gifted athlete who did amazing things on the ground but my favourite to watch (maybe not the best of all time)was the PLUGGER I bet a number of players today would love to have his kicking technique he was a dead eye dick, take a strong mark and very quick of the mark. How would people on here like to play spare man in defence and cover the hole that plugger was leading into !!! Good luck.

Maurice Rioli for me
Sometimes the opposing coach would play
five different blokes on him in one game
and he'd take them all apart.

Keith Narkle
The Narkle boys were amazing players. Imagine a WAFL team with Keith on one wing, Phil on the other, Leon Baker or Mike Smith in the middle, Simon at FF and Ron rucking.
I played junior footy at Midland with Keith. Played on Midland oval were the old bitumen velodrome track was. When it rained the whole oval became a dam. Centre was also the turf wicket of the cricket club. Great memories.
I remember a state game when big Ron Boucher would just smash into Madden time and time again. Madden must have felt like he had done 12 rounds with Ali.
