Good day on the water another Baldie and a huuuge Cuttlefish !

Hit Hepburn Ave at 0630, and as we were heading west...there was lightning going off everywhere. Got to the ramp at 0700, and there was only 20 trailers already in the carpark and all the launch ramps were free...got to love that!

Headed straight out west of Hillarys, and our first spot to visit was were Claire got her Baldie 2 weeks ago about 10 mile out. After a couple of drifts with only 2 undersize Dhuis and 2 undersize pink snapper..i was starting to think, maybe its time to move on. When all of a sudden Claires rod bent over and after a good fight, another good baldchin was floating on the surface. She was very happy and after a quick high five it was game on again.

Another drift and im kicking back feeling my line bouncing over the bottom ..bump..bump bang i was on! My rod was bent over bigtime, and im thinking here comes my first pink snapper on my boat. But once my catch had got to the surface it was a huge cuttle fish...that had been hooked on my snelled rig with a fillet of whiting on it. It sure did put up a good fight.

After a few pics and the esky getting full, we thought we would try out some new ground. We spotted some craypots about 8 mile out and decided to drift past them a few times only to find plague proportions of undersize snapper and skippy around the 40cm mark.

We then headed in close for some squid, but again nothing seemed to be on the bite..for the last 3 trips no squid...where are they all??

Anyway we had another great day on the water, fresh fish for tea tommorow night.....life is hard aye!

Nice size boldy Claire got to love the fight they put up ..... Now that is one huge culttle fish Wade. Disapointing when you think you have a good size fish on but you can not complain when it is that size and not to bad on the taste buds.

great cuttle

Tue, 2009-06-02 16:56

My cousin was diving for crays when a huge cuttle came right up to him so he cray looped it. the next few minutes were hilarious as the entire area was jet black with ink and he nearly got his shoulder wrenched out!
It went close to a metre and was as tuff as ever no matter how he cooked it. He even put some in the pressure cooker for no result.
Let us know how yours tasted.

Tasted sweet

Tue, 2009-06-02 17:22

Tasted sweet as mate!First trick is to cook each side only for around a minute... Trick no2 ,is to rub some Kiwi fruit juice on the flesh a few hours before you eat it. The acid in the kiwi fruit breaks down the flesh, making it tender. You can use the same idea with shit squid you buy from the super market.

A old Greek cook we had on the prawn trawlers taught me this trick..enjoy
