Good diesel Mechanic

Can anyone reccomend a good diesel mechanic?  I've just bought a '95 2.8TD rodeo and think I may have been shafted - the thing is chewing through oil.  It starts ok and power is ok, though smokes heavily when pulling away from standstill or starting up.

I may have one possible place to take it (and i don't mean the scrap yard!!!) though just wanted to find out other options if that falls through.  I'm SOR.  I want someone to check it out, do a compression test etc and estimate what I'd be up for to sort it out.  eg new rings, dodgy turbo seals, valve steam seals/guides, dodgy air intake gasket etc etc. I'll then make a call whether to do the work or take the hit and sell it with known issues.

Cheers

Matt

Have a 1995 gq patrol 4.2 diesel ,only done 395,000 kms , but thought I had

better put some new injectors in it, as they hadnt been done for 100,000.

Only places recomm were united fuel inj and fremantle fuel inj, cant go wrong they said.

So booked her in at freos, and picked her up a day later, awaiting the new powerhouse haha.

The next day it seemed hard to start, so I popped the hood , and found both fuel lines to the filter

leaking as the clamps were only hand tight. While under there found a bolt off the aircleaner sitting

next to the battery, as well as some extra greasy fingerprints for my trouble.

experts , over used word , but have only heard good things about united.

good luck mate, your gonna need it.

sounds like the turbo could be farked. Drop the intake hose off at the turbo and check for signs of oil and while your in there check the shaft for play. A little play is normal as oil pressure will take care of that but if the impellor blades look like they have been contacting the housing time to upgrade to a toyota.

is the smoke blue, white, grey or black?

Black-start with air cleaner, choked intercooler

white/grey-no thermostat?

blue-oil rings, valve stem seals?

good advise

rob h, although he has said : chewing through heaps of oil: so blocked air cleaner , cooler, or

no therm prob woulnd cause that , would they?

at ex govt and mine auctions I have seen the ole 2.8 t/d rodeo,s with 500000kms on them

still running ok, so being a isuzi motor they can last a long time, how many kms does yours have

mattyoga?

If yours does turn out no good , those old 2.8 motors must be resonably priced in the wrecking

sections of the quokka , gumtree etc, if you can find a good one I suppose.

Theres a fully recon 4jb1 head( 2.8 litre) on perth gumtree atm for $ 400 bucks

and Im sure wanneroo 4x4 wreckers or tonys would have them too.

Thanks for the advice. Smoke

Thanks for the advice.

Smoke is blue - engine thermo indicates it is not running hot and the guy I got it off had just fitted a new turbo, though could have f***ed it up!

Will pull the inlet hose and have a look at the turbo.  Engine does have a fair bit of blow by, though I'm not sure if the old rodeos have that anyhow - I've been told they were designed to run with a relatively high positive crank case pressure. Its not eneough to push the dipstick out.
