gps gone to heaven! every gps mark lost!
headed out saturday to try boat a feed, about half way out and the gps starts playin up (ohh nooo) but lil did i know by the time i was almost at my first mark she was completely dead and was in fish heaven... :(. tryed everything i could to get her back but no luck. it still hasnt sunk in that i am back where i started a fair few years ago. spotless... i thought instead of crying and beating myself blue i would celebrate her death, even gave her a burial. lol so just thought id put up a few pics of the fish she got me (excuse the rude head in pic1) and go get a new one. ( got the hds) now just need to go find all the lumps again. eery feeling starting from scatch again but thats life. just gratefull to have a tub. so if anyone has any spots and cant access a tub just send us a pm and were out the next day the weather gods shine on us. RIP gurtie, fun times...

Sorry to hear that's a bummer
Sorry to hear that's a bummer - Guess you don't want to hear this - but back up - back up - back up.
I keep mine all written down on a word doc and every so often I update any new marks. I then back up the word doc on a couple of different hard drives (including our work one which has 3 additional backups).
I'm guessing you'll keep a record of any new marks you'll fine.

I know i have put this up
I know i have put this up here before, but the easy way to back up is to just bring up the page listing your marks (navman has one) then photograph it with your phone or camera

tried that but nothing!
i was hoping that might be the case vinesh, i did try hooking it up to my pc and laptop but nothing. pretty sure i saw a tiny puff of smoke come out of the unit when it died so i guess that was its cremation... lol good to know i can back up all my new spots(when i find them) reasonably easy.

The data has to be there
Might need to get someone to have a look, but I am certain that data is retrievable.
Saw a program about photocopiers and faxes where the data is all stored on a disc somewhere in the machines, and with know how you can retrieve all the info. I am certain though even if it is dead your points may be recoverable.
I hope for you. But then I am in the same book. Have great points in Karratha/Dampier, no great ones down here YET.
Might have to move back if I plan to catch a decent fish!!!!

money
is the deciding factor-and its not guaranteed to be retrievable.
Found that out when my computer packed up. Cost me $250 for some clown to come out and run a scan etc and then tell me he could maybe do it in the workshop-$$$$.
After a bit of googling I got 95% of my photos off myself.
The plotters etc I think youd need special gear to be able to read the data as its not a simple HDD and Id be surprised if anyone in Perth would have that stuff.
Email the manufacturer maybe, Im sure it wouldn't be the first time asked!

These guys were able to get a friends photos off a broken hard drive. They took the magnetic disks out of the broken hard drive and used their own reader to get the data back.
They say they can also read solid state SD drives.

However from memory it was very expensive.

from memory that was one of the places I spoke to, located over east, and it was something like a $6-800 up front payment then more depending on difficulty and no guarantee.
Geared more toward commercial requirements.

Funnily enough I never back up my marks and have lost a few GPS units over the years.
I use the opportunity to look for new ground but I always have a pretty good idea of general areas to be looking.
