Gravel patch

G'day all,
I've been searching for "the gravel patch" in Cockburn sound using a chart & my GPS thingy with no joy.
I have found something called "spoil ground", is this the same thing??
Any help would be appreciated.

gravel patch
i beleive is back from when ships used rock, limestone for ballast...they use to dump in centre off sound...if you line up channel markers (out from woodies) as 1 (one behind other) ..you are dead centre off sound. the best area off balast i have found is just nth off b.p refinery...heading from g island towards main land you can pick up def rise ,,,old dumping ground ..not marked on maps...always good for mullyies in march april...unsure but i was told the d9(before it sunk) was used for picking up ballast from big ships that come into sound...one off the first pros fisherman in area told me this unsure ??? there is def small mounds off rock structures dead centre ...even catck reef fish there(rock cod,,ect) good luck hope this has helped.

the most talked about yet unknown of spot lol!!! it depends who you talk to regarding the spot to where it is! little johnnny has given you a rough idea of where it is

Mud patch
I think now they are mud patches I have locations for 3 gravel patches but all I've ever found is mud glorious mud!!

haha yeah i know the spot :) its north of the d9 in about 8m of water. i swam with a very curious 3.5m greatwhite there...

i would have to disagree with you fanatic
the spot is in deeper water than that! 20 metres! there are plenty of rocky areas in 8 metres along that bank that runs from just south of the nine to freo but it is not regarded as the gravel patch! the older guys who have been fishing the sound for many years will have a better idea than the newer guys as it seems the gravel patch is where most people say they are catching the snapper these days! so when they are running and people say they are at the gravel patch it can be any where from out from sulphur to the sticks in the centre of the sound right over to the other side of the bay near the pinnacles but the real gravel patch doesnt show up like it used to due to shipping

it was a bag of squid and ytk
it was a bag of squid and ytk and fish parts but yeah it wasnt the north pinicle the guy on my boat said so, he called it the gravel patch :/ there were lots of like little rocks and stuff of the bottom in that area. a few skippy and stuff and a big shark :D

There are over 15 different
There are over 15 different gravel patches throughout the Sound. I used to know where they all were once, but not anymore.

Good to know. If sure the security guys are only doing what they're paid to do. I'm sure that sitting on their arses in front of a tele would be the preferred option.

you can fish around the ammy jetty and not get annoyed but if you fish down the side of the island where nothing is they kick you out

when i go out tomoz for dive...i will p.m a gps point to you .i have fished in cockburn for 27 years everone has different ideas where when and what it is ...this will put you where i am pretty sure it is.(one main dump spot)..this time off year you only get gummys and mullys there...when you dive there 20.5 m deep ...small bolders littered on bottom everywhere some in small piles 2 feet high ...

One of the best places we
One of the best places we used to fish and always easily to find was on the north east corner of the the island, there used to be a wooden structure built there and I think it was for the ships to tie up to and there was a big gravel spot in front of that and we used to catch pinkies, mullas, sharks, some huge skippies and almost everything else from that spot.

I went out in the sound for
I went out in the sound for the first time the other week and probably spent the better part of 4 hours looking for some ground. Unfortunately i only found one spot which was quite shallow.
If you do a search there is a post that has the co-ords for the D9 wreck however like you said everyone talks about the gravel patch but i couldnt find co-ords for it anywhere.
Oh an does anyone know how far away from GI you are supposed to stay?

Was out near garden island
Was out near garden island on the weekend, and from the naval patrol it is 500m from shore. Although he was letting boats in closer north of the armament jetty from the rocky parts to the north and south. This is obviously on the eastern(inside) of the island.
On my gps there is a pink line drawn about 500m pretty much right around the island. I was just inside when they came to talk to me.
I got nothing but trumpeter unfortunately for the day, was trying for whiting, squid.
