Grease hardened in steering
Submitted by Tom M on Sat, 2019-02-02 10:34
Guys seen some previous posts on tips to free up steering on the motor pivot shaft where the grease has hardened, my motor is 90 HP Suzi 4 stroke. Interested if anyone has tried the following tip suggested via a you tube clip.
I have disconnected steering cable and confirmed no issues there.
The tip suggested heating up the area in between grease nipples ( I would suggest with hair dryer or the sorts) while trying to pump frsh grease in and turning motor. Any thoughts or recommendations.
Last resort is to remove power head to access the shaft?

I dont know if this will
I dont know if this will work with any grease gun but I did one where I half emptied a cartridge and filled it up the other half with wd40 and with the gun pointed in the air carefully loaded it back in the gun. Put it in high pressure low flow mode and slowly but surely freed the motor up pumping wd40 through the nipple. First pull the nipple out and make sure there isnt a hard plug of grease blocking the hole. Would probably work with diesel also but wd40 disolves rust. Lightly heat up the area ound the nipple as well and something should go in. Took a while but worked.

Think Randall had a thread somewhere about doing the same also, now there’s someone I’ve not seen hide nor hair of.

Oil
I never used grease. Just fill your grease gun with oil.

Fill with moly lube once
Fill with moly lube once it's all cleaned and steering cable ready to go back in. It's a lithium based white grease that doesn't go hard. Been using for years since had the hard grease problem. Bought from marine shop.
You hear it all the time. I'm greasing the steering via the 2 nipples on the front of steering shaft. A tip for people that think that pumping grease into the nipples on front of the steering actually greases the steering cable, it doesn't. All it greases is the outer pivot tube casing that the motor pivots up and down on.

I can confirm that heating
I can confirm that heating the casing using a hairdryer liquified the grease and allowed me to then pump in fresh grease. Based on responses from some guys I will now purge that with a lithium based greased. Phew that is better than removing the power head. Thanks again all for advise.
