Stern Heavy Rig

I've got a Seafarer V-Sea with the max 90hp, 2x batteries, deckwash and a 90l underfloor fuel tank that starts at the bilge and finishes at the end of the deck.

Long story short she's bum heavy and the previous owner whacked a hydrofoil on it to negate this and I have tried to sort the issue with the foil removed.

I have since moved the outboard up a hole, then up another and back down one which has helped. I also bought a 4 blade prop which helps in smaller choppy conditions but the bow is still lifting too high over big chop and swells causing the hull to slap rather than slice through.

I put the foil back on and now with the 4 blade prop she slices through the  heavy chop like a dream (30knot winds in the Peel) but I just don't like the way the foil grabs when you come down a bit of swell or chop and pushes you in one direction.

Has anyone had a similar problem and negated this by putting some weight in the anchor well? I could chuck on an anchor winch with butloads of chain but looking for a cheaper option for now.

Cheers JF

V-sea

Is it the 4.7 or the later 5.0?

You could always keep an eye out on gumtree for some fatsac bladders. They come up cheap from time to time and usually come with pumps and wiring. An easy way to put 100kg of water on the floor in the cuddy and can be emptied for towing.

Other than that all of your options have more expense. Moving batteries forward somehow, automatic electric trim tabs, anchor winch and chain etc.

You may also need to check the way you are driving the boat in bigger chop. If the front of the boat hooks when you are coming down a wave then it is trimmed too far down. Maybe need to find the happy medium. Drop a couple of knots and trim up a little.

With the tabs on my boat I use them to push the front down but then trim the motor out and it equals stern lift and rides nicely.

I've got some automatic (pneumatic) 'smart tabs' I could let you have cheap if you want to try them. They were too small on my 23 but the biggest they sold at the time (80lb).

I’d be hesitant to add weight

Thu, 2019-01-31 09:40

I’d be hesitant to add weight into the nose of a seafarer. They had enough of a reputation for dipping the nose under without any help.

I would look at ditching the foil and going tabs instead.

I'd have to agree

Unless you can redistribute existing weight, I'd be very careful about adding extra weight. They aren't called Seaspearers for nothing. It looks unlikely you can redistibute. Tabs aren't cheap, but you will get the bow down, along with a little engine trim in, then you just trim them right back up and trim engine accordingly when running down-sea. Foils work fine on some boats, I've had them on a couple and there were no negatives at all, but not all boats react the same to them.

I agree with dodgy & ranmar

I agree with dodgy & ranmar and wouldn’t be adding extra weight to the bow. I have a 6m Seafarer and have buried the bow a couple of times, more so when menovering slow pulling cray pots. Under speed I have never had a problem.

Move some weight

Thu, 2019-01-31 10:44

You need to get some booty outta that girls ass...... Try and relocate as much gear as you can further forwards. It may cost a little but try moving your batteries ( make some bigger leads ) forwards there’s a good 40 kg to start with . Any thing that doesn’t need to be down the back mobe it . Failing that switch to 100 metres of 8mm chain for anchoring !

 Thanks for your responses,

Thanks for your responses, really appreciate it and the nose dipping with extra weight is something that was my main concern which is why I haven’t tried it yet and will avoid trying. I did fill up a 20l jerry can with water and placed it under the cabin which seemed to make a difference so will keep my eye out for a bag that I can use as a ballast in the cuddy cabin and double as a fresh water wash down for the kids after a swim with Rob’s idea of installing an L-port in my deckwash line. Might also look at moving the batteries but it'll likely be too tight and take away where the kids rest their heads when they want a rest.

Trim tabs would definitely be the go and I have looked into it but the position of the transom steps and the curved transom mean I am limited to the Volvo tabs and I would need to pay to get shims made up to square up the tabs. It all seemed too hardbasket unfortunately but happy to hear from anyone who has successfully installed tabs on a curved transom.

She’s fine driving down the face of bigger rolling swells and it’s those larger wind waves you don’t see until you hit them where I feel the back grip/kick momentarily so doesn’t feel unsafe so maybe just a case of driving as Zoom says and living with the foil which really does make life a lot more comfortable 99% of the time.

Cheers lads

I'm with you on the foil

I'm with you on the foil issue. I've read other people mention foils can be dangerous on deep V hulls. I would play it safe and remove the foil and go trim tabs and whenever boating stow all the heavy gear as forward towards the bow as possible

I had a similar issue on my 6m Stessl that I rebuilt. At the dock you could see that it was very heavy in the arse with a 2003 Honda 4banger and just didn't sit right. It rode like a pig and in medium sized chop it would smash mid-hull and was so uncomfortable. It was a stand-up only boat…

I added 100kg of river stones from Bunnings in 20kg bags under the anchor and under the bunks. I actually settled on 60kgs as the optimum and it transformed/saved the boat. They were about $7 a bag for 20kgs and take up a lot less room than water. It did have a high bow and I can’t comment directly on the Seafarer but that was my experience… The kids painted the other 40kgs of stones.

Yeah but it was my first time

Sat, 2019-02-02 10:06

Yeah but it was my first time driving a boat but we drove around outside of Hillarys marina in 20knot winds at full throttle and I was very happy with the way the hull sliced through the chop. Still am but looking to see if I can fine tune the setup as I prefer the handling without the foil.

If I take the foil off and head out with another 85kg passenger and esky etc up front it's fine but it's when I go out solo or with the kids that's when I can feel the bow lifting too much resulting in slapping rather than slicing.

Seafarer

Sat, 2019-02-02 07:49

 G'Day Jack,

I have a V-Sea 5.0 with 90 Etec,

Three blade SS prop launches it up on to the plane quicker.

With 80 lts fuel tank and twin batteries in the bum she can be a little boggy but I just launch her out and then use the trim, I have no foils.

The prop is where I would be investigating further.

Depending on how many and where people are on board makes a huge difference as well. Esky and most gear (including spare Jerry can if required) are stored up front.

Let me know how you go, I have a spare prop if you want to borrow to check it out as far as set-up comparison is concerned.

Adios

Cheers for the offer bud but

Cheers for the offer bud but she has no problems getting out of the hole quickly and smoothly with or without the foil and changing to the 4 blade hasn't affected this either. You must fly along with the 90 Etec!
