Great White - cage diving in South Africa

Amazing up-close photo of great white shark while cage diving in South Africa

Amanda Brewer, 25, travelled halfway across the world to volunteer as a scientific data collector for White Shark Africa - an organization dedicated to animal conservation and eco-tourism.  Brewer, a lifelong shark enthusiast and amateur photographer was enjoying a cage dive in Mossel Bay off Seal Island hoping to catch a glimpse of the much maligned sea creatures.

Amanda Brewer, 25, an art teacher from New Jersey, took this incredible picture while cage diving in Mossel Bay, South Africa

With her GoPro camera in burst mode, Brewer took 30 snapshots, but only one stood out

The art teacher described herself as a life-long shark enthusiast
Brewer noted that the fish eye lens on her camera made the shark appear closer to the cage than it was in reality
Brewer added that the fish-eye lens on her camera made the shark appear closer to her than it was in reality, which was about 3 feet from the cage.

She said the shark came out of nowhere, and she was simply at the right place and at the right time with her trusty GoPro at the ready.

I did one of the cage dives at the same place (Gaansbai) a few years ago and the vessel we were on was also a reseach vessel.  Privileged experience and saw seven different sharks while we were out, the first within minutes of arriving.

The guys in the third pic must feel pretty surefooted!!

Thanks for sharing the pics.

totally disagree with the whole concept ,dont see any benifits other than to tag! but to attract them just for the pleasure of teasing them then justify & make money all in the name of scientific research is plain dumb .

  May be a farfetched idea

May be a farfetched idea but they could possibly become accustomed to humans taunting them in cages, etc. and this could provoke later attacks

Pretty amazing shots. In that first one, the head, eyes etc. just looks as if they are sitting on top of an enormous set of teeth. I for one would not like that to be the last thing I saw in this life !
