you will find with some encouragement it will come off - once you start it will rip off quite easily.
Without a picture /specifics its hard to say whether you could cover it - i would say that about the only thing you could cover it with would be larger strip which might look worse.
I bought some new strip off ali-express a few years ago - it was hard to find a supplier who didn't want me to buy a kilometre of the stuff but what i did end up with was not bad (white with a black rubber (insert) strip

rubbers, I have an older voyager and couldnt get the original rubber anymore. I replaced mine a couple of years back and it wasnt expensive, hope this helps
