hamelin bay salmon 10-11/4/10
decided to get stuck into the salmon, was sick of reading all the reports and not being able to catch them myself!
so me and a couple friends who are new to fishing trecked down to hamelin bay for the weekend.
Things started off pretty quiet saturday morning couldn't spot any schools so pulled up and fished a gutter with no success, so time to up and try further along the beach, we noticed a guy just catch a lone salmon so stopped for a chat. we continued on our way down the beach and then i saw a school, quickly started throwing lures at it to no avail, then anther school merged with it and also a few other anglers... one guys chucked out a mulie and hooked up in seconds! this was all the encouragement i needed so on with the mulies it was. first cast and bang i'm on, onto a solid salmon around the 5kg mark, u beauty got the first one. so next up was to get my friends hooked up and with the next cas thats exactly wot happened.
the girls were having a great time just watching everyone chase the school up the beach so were stoked to say the least to hook one for themselves. we managed 4 out of the school before it got too cold to wade out into the ocean to reach the school.
so a cruisey night with a few drinks was on the cards to recharge the batteries for the next day.
the next morning after a nice sleep in we just started fishing and a school swam past us so we got stuck back into them with the girls catching another 3 between them and another 3 for myself.
all salmon we caught was using mulies and seemed to be the most effective but lures accounted for a few by others too.

yeah it was great to teach
yeah it was great to teach the girls how to fight a fish, not just skull drag like they do to herring...
on that note one of the gilrs was up to the task, baited a rod up for herself baitcasted an unweighted mulie out once the school had gone past and hooked up while i was off chasing the school! i turned aroung to see my light gear getting streched and her fighting this 5kg salmon like she'd done it all her life! it was her second ever salmon and to say i was pretty chuffed with her efforts was a bit of an understatement! especially on the gear she was using
