What's the deal with the jetty? I remember when we had our wedding pics there 7 years ago it was in bad shape, they rebuilding it I guess? I remember when I was a young fella and they were building the apartments my brother got a nice mully off there on a nilsmaster lure. My uncle tried getting the lure out and we ended up at royal Perth hospital with a mulla in the back of the 60s cruiser and a hook in my uncles hand, lucky some tradies came down and cut the lure off so he could get his hand out of its gob. My uncle returned 2 years later to the date to nail another nice mulla on another nilsmaster. Shame about the crabs also

Get your bag ?
Hi Uncle, did you get a bag. We went the other day and only got one size. Looks like it will be closer to February before they are a decent size
Don't spend all your money on beer, boats, and fishing. Save some to spend foolishly

Size matters?
yeah mandurah report today from harvey estuary
Very few size been landed ,,( spoke to other boaties , all the same) , hundreds of males 2 to 4mm under ,, another month and it will be on ...
The crays were a few weeks later this year so its running to form that animals dont have calenders............
And it plays nicely into my belief that crab time should be feb onways , and increase the size to 130mm
they did it in the shark bay blue manna industry a couple years back and they have never had it so good , after the marine heatwave
the fishery collapased but thru strict self managment and slighly increasing the size , they have restored there business.....worth a thought?

I whole heartedly agree with
I whole heartedly agree with a size of 130mm but don't see the point in a seasonal closure for them unless it's to leave them alone during a breeding cycle.
I was getting 150+ models this time last year so they've either reached size or they haven't by Feb and the size limit dictates whether they go in the esky or not.
Taking the kids scooping or pulling nets is a key school holiday activity for many families and gets the kids off their devices and out doing something sometimes with both their dad and grandad which is invaluable.

Smashed crab?
My concern stems from the multitudes of dead crabs , all undersize that get roughly scooped up every dec before xmas and over the holidays..
The death rate must be very high , all done for nothing ,,,, im aware it will never gain traction for your reasons stated by yourself but from
the fisheries dept outlook , i hope they would put the fishery first before a popular decision , because ulimately those grandads and grandkids will have
nothing left to scoop in the future .
Dont forget the bio mass of crabs is much less than the glory days of the 60s and 70s , and on top of that the population has grown probally double,,
Dont forget what we have lost in the prawning in the swan , many due to all sorts of pressures , not overfishing per se in there case ...but its a lesson in
how delicate fisheries can be ,, and once lost they are almost impossible to return,,,,,,

Not good to hear about the jetty and lack of crabs.
I remember back when I was a kid they used to have lights up on the old brewery. I remember there was a sailing ship and a swan but there was 1 or 2 others

a couple of bullet points
yep, twiggy owns the brewery complex, and its (at least) part of his Minderoo office.
the jetty is currently being replaced, completion due approx february.
river crabs are very small at the moment, but there is still a feed to be had. we got our bag of 10 in about 2.5 hours last night.
driving along mounts bay rd on Monday night approx 9:30pm, there were HOARDS of "families" with literally hundreds of crab nets all along the bike path from the boat shed to the narrows.... i shit you not, i lost count of peolpe after about 65, and that was only about half way.
I'm sincierly hoping they were doing the right thing, but it would not take much for fisheries to do a compliance walk here once a night, especially at this time of year, and even more so since the introduction of the "trophy waters" crab bag limit of 5 crabs pp.

Big difference to when I used to fish for Swan crabs in the late 90's early 2000's would be maybe me and 5 other dinghys out there at most. All monster blues.

I remember as a young kid fishing herison island for bream at night and the monster blues would be a pest for us, constantly picking up our prawns and tangling in our lines.

This might be controversial
But I'm going to disagree people all smash the same areas and don't think outside the box then just claim there are none around. The last 2 years in the swan is the best I have seen size and quantities. I have been going out when I'm home from work and smash my bag limit in 1/2 hour. Maybe I'm lucky but I have not missed once in 8 trips this year one night before Christmas I take the whole family out to get Christmas lunch sorted and grabbed 25 in just over an hour
