Harvey Dam

Hey gguys just wondering if anyone went to Harvey Dam today or is planning on going this week I think the season opened today? I'm off this coming Friday and want to go for a fish all day but never been before I am thinking of leaving Perth around 3am so I can get all set up ready for sunrise does anyone have any tips on lures or some pointers on good spots around the dam? Is using lures the best way to go or does anyone bait for the trout?

cheers guys

 Ive been fishing up there

Ive been fishing up there for years and I find metal wobblers and Tassie Devils do very well if you are landbased.

Being such an open waterway you can cover alot of water with the extra casting distance of these lures and you can fish all depths.

If you go up the road till the end of the dam and take a left on the gravel road, follow that around and fish that leg of the dam, always produces this time of year.

Some of the lures

These are some of the lures i use at Harvey .  http://fishwrecked.com/forum/trout-lures-and-flies

If you leave Perth at 3 am , you should get there just before sunrise . Anyware around the dam is good , the boat ramp is a good place to start if you don't know your way around . Jump on google maps and have a look at likley spots before you go down there .

Good warning, I put over 1k into my trout box in the mid nineties without even noticing. Lucky my missus is here to remind me :) . I haven't spent that much yet on marlin lures.

Landed one nice rainbow, lost

Landed one nice rainbow, lost 2 others. Also got a 41cm fat as redfin and four other small ones. Had to switch to the deep diving hardbody's to get down between 4.5 and 5m before I started getting any strikes. I was trolling from a small tinny.

Same here

Same here Micky, got there at 5 am this morning ( Monday ) , wind wasn't as bad as i thought it would be . Nothing rising at my first spot but landed a runt reddy.

Second spot some big browns were working the area right in front of me , but couldn't tempt them .

I met a friend who had a yearling ( Rainbow ) that he kept. The guts were full of Lawn Beatles of various types.

So i think jighead is correct in saying they were feeding down low in the water. Not a lot of insects on top of the water yet, a few warm days should change that and the trout should start rising and feeding on the surface a bit more.

Cheers Grant .

PS : There were a few caught this morning around the dam by other fishers, so it's always worth a go, beats going to work on a Monday

Boat ramp is easy 2wd, just a gravel road, and there's a few tracks go in further up the dam, usually ok for 2wd at least part of the way. Road generally no more than 100m from the water anyway

Sorry for the late reply guys I went doen there last friday got there before dawn around 5 30 and started fishing int he dark there were already a few keen guys fishing before me and a couple went out on a small tinny. I had quite a few redfin taking the lures but unfortunately no trout and aI fished from about 5:30 til 11:00 met another lanbased fisho who said he caught a small yearling nut released it apart from that pretty quiet I did hear some commotion from a few yakkers so im guessing they got lucky. I saw a few rise int he early morning too but after sun came up it went pretty quiet. Still had a great day out there sure as hell beat working on a friday!
