are any of the braids suitable for slide fishing?

Howdy folks,

just wondering if any of these new braids are at all suitable for sliding rigs/bait (live or dead 'slide fishing') instead of needing the 150 or more of mono . for shore based fishing of course

seems when ever i look lines are thinner for same capicity, have all sorts of marketing hype stating they are more abraision resitant , ultra smooth and round, not to mention all kinds of pretty colours now.

as an example, braids such as Diawa Saltiga Hyper PE 8 Braid +Si  ...which i assume is their top of range and most expensive, but any brand is ok with me if it works?

cheers

You need the stretch in the mono to be able to slide a bait. I have tried to slide  with braid and its very hard work.

Mono

Was told that if you had a run and your slide is not all the way to the stopper ,it could generate heat and weaking the braid ie like your braid running onto a reef etc .I have 50lb braid topped with 0.5mm thick mono about 150m to slide on. Enter slide baiting on the forum search .there is a well written article on the subject

Ive done it on sufix 80lb

Ive done it on sufix 80lb with a 4-5m wind on leader.    Works fine if you're elevated and using livies, I wouldnt bother off the beach or anything at water level. Ive only been burnt off with mono but im sure if you hook something big enough braid wouldnt fair too well.

Landed big sambos and a couple of thumper YTKs sliding with braid. Im now confident using it.

need the stretch if your in

Sat, 2013-09-21 02:49

need the stretch if your in any kind of surf or your sinker will be pulled loose too easy, just one of many reasons to stick with mono top shot. Yep its doable with braid, but I dont think its a good idea.

 thanks guys, not the answer

Sun, 2013-09-22 23:29

 thanks guys,

not the answer i was hoping for but thanks anyway.

i cant really use mono on this particular reel (dont have the room), for beach mulloway at least i am thinking. i should have noticed straight off the bat but the saleman got the better of me, actualy i did pick up on the capicity and said to him, discounting it but for some reason i beleived him when he said it was plenty for large mulloway. then a few days later when i was thinking about sliding i thought well that (mono) aint gona fit!

perhaps i'll start a new thread but my spool (even though 15kg drag) only holds PE 3-250m. PE 4 -180m. and it also says Line No. 4-250m. 5-200m. 6-165m ,what does Line number mean anyway?. i am that far behind the times i have only just grsped what PE is lol

just how much line does one need for large mulloway off the beach (south australia)?

cheers

 how about keeping the outfit

Tue, 2013-09-24 00:26

how about keeping the outfit you have for casting and getting something else for sliding if you feel like it down the track. Daiwas sl50shb is a really capable cheap reel or the torium 30 is great bang for the buck, then you can target some of the big sharks down there as well.

Sliding is great for real big baits or getting live baits to a gutter fresher, but its gonna make a good hook set harder especially on spooky fish like mullas, also any weed makes it bloody hard work. Dont get me wrong, Im a big fan of sliding, but its best to have other options.

I reckon you will get enough line on the reel you have for mullas unless your casting bloody miles, out of interest what reel is it? As far as no. 4 or no. 5 line, I have no bloody idea. Maybe someone else could clear that up.

Nice option Cuthbad

Makes alot of sense .When i first thought of slide baiting ,i had my Penn 750SSM only .Problem being line capacity .Solution was to be extra nice to the WIFE ,Result 3 new rods and reels

  sounds like a good,

sounds like a good, practical solution,  thanks cuthbad

might be old age but with all the options, trying to get the best fit can be a real (reel) um, mind twister trying to decide whats what

i am trying to avoid overheads, though i get your meaning and can still be done using something else, i am familiar with them and i have used them, (still have them but i packed/retired em away) for some years now (not that i am an expert but i do ok) but i'd prefer to change to spinners/eggbeaters ,particularly now they are getting lighter than they used to be, and thats the other thing i am wanting to achieve is a light weight set up, i definitely don't want to cart around my old snyder and alvey set up if i can help it, i'll let my lads use that although even they will probably give it a miss as i'm giving them a saltiga surf 6000 set up each for xmas which ironically would about cover all bases, mine are lighter reels, not common in Oz (from japan) , same brand ,a surf qd forty five.

which is kinda why i find myself in this predicament and almost not having the choice of using mono because the spools don't have large capacity (i was told by a shop guy that i can fit a larger capacity spool on the QD forty five but i havnt found it yet, seems like they are designed to carry fine braid. which keeps me wondering if braid is suitable or better than mono from the beach (seems all the go nowadays, even many of the surf rods available from the store come with runners that are only suitable for braid, i.e. slatiga surf ballistic). some ppl are adamant to only use mono for its stretch and resistance to abrasion while others like the feel/sensitivity of braid (spool capacity is also a factor in this case although probably 250m is enough for  large mulloway (?) .maybe i'll split it down the middle and use that fireline stuff, it has a little stretch, 3% i thought i was told once, vs 5-7% for mono, and is about half way between mono and braid in diameter.

cheers
