Has anyone joined braid to game wire?

Hey guys I have been wondering if it's possible to successfully join braid to single strand game wire? I'm thinking with an albright, yucutan type etc. My aim is to eliminate the use of a swivel at that end of the wire leader before the lure for spinning up north. I'll give it a go to see what happens but I thought someone else may have tried it and have some feedback.

Cheers.

Knotkinky

Wed, 2013-03-06 11:18

Hey Howa , I did use the Knotkinky (brand) nickel-titanium wire which has a 10-15% stretch factor whilst casting bibbed minnows in Fiji , but I did put a short mono leader on first . Found it to be O.K but when used trolling i found after a bit of use it broke on their recommended knot (perfection loop) used to tie to a lure (lost lures!!) , so I started to use fine crimps for lure connection , then was alright . Good feature of it was it did not kink like other single strand wire. Have got a couple of packs in store in 65lb ,45lb,35lb and one 25lb. Am also interested in anyone else's exeriences with tieing wire to braid..

I use multi strand wire as a

I use multi strand wire as a bite leader up to 110lbs for casting/trolling lures and use an albright for conection, mind you this not does not come through the guides repeatedly, can't be good for them.

yeah ive done it successfully

yeah ive done it successfully many times. In locations where you have large schools of mackys, the other fish end up biting you off if they see a swivel or other hardware. I used to tie a double to a heavy mono eg 100lb then albright it to the single strand. Its not conventionable but it worked for me. I was mostly trolling by the way . It might work for you if you do a very short mono leader. eg 6 inch leader to a short single strand wire. If tied carefully you wont have any issues. Maybe a dob of superglue on the knot will also help. Ive never tried going straight from  braid to wire though, Im not sure the knot would tie well.  Worth a try for sure.

You might have success in a 49 strand. I tie it like mono and i know the south africans do it successfully as well chasing sharks but i have never tied it straight to braid.

Thanks guys. Some good info

Thanks guys. Some good info and experience there. My main concern was if tieing directly from braid to wire, the deterioration of the braid coming into the knot over the end of the wire loop eg albright knot. This would almost certainly be averted with the use of a small mono piece to bridge the 2. I'm going to False Entrance on Saturday so I might try it without the mono first using a slab of kangaroo on a 10/0 infront of a shark to see how long it lasts.

why do you want to eliminate

why do you want to eliminate the swivel?

if its for bite offs use black swivels they rarely get hit, i just spent a few days spinnig at steep and used a bimini to gt for a windon leader and just a blood knot onto the swivel and haywire twist in the wire worked just fine

as an ex professional mackeral fisherman its what we used all the time and rarely failed, if you use metals for spinning you will need a swivel or the line twist will leave you with major knots in your braid after about 3 casts,

i wouldnt want to tie my braid to single strand wire i would be to afraid it would cut through on a big fish

Firstly it's not for bite

Firstly it's not for bite offs - dont think I have ever had one on the swivel. I have little doubt that a swivel in front of a lure is off putting to the fish and as you would know after just going to steep there are times when it's hard to temp the fish to strike. Eliminating the swivel at THAT end of the wire will go a long way to helping that problem. On a pro boat you would no doubt be either fishing a school of mackerel or at the very least a higher population area where feeding is more intense. I doubt a swivel before a lure would be a problem in that situation. Also I know a swivel needs to be used which I have at the other end of the wire going onto the split ring. As for the snapping off on a big fish, I have mentioned above I will test it first to see how it goes then use a mono bridge if it fails. Thanks for your reply.

no worries i can garuntee you though the swivel attached to your lure is more off putting than one attached to the wire

cheers
