Havent Learnt

Fished the same area on saturday that I fished one month ago and on the first drop Shirley pulled up a Dhuie we had tagged and released one month earlier. The Dhie was caught in 33m of water and was released the second time in as good as condition as the first time. We moved in close to 20m and caught and released another six Dhuies with tags before keeping the last fish of the day that went 9kgs.

On the day the tagged fish was first caught another three Dhies were tagged in the same location.

It will be interesting to see over the coming months and years if I continue to catch the same fish in the same locations.

Was interesting back at the ramp when I was talking to the Fisheries, one of the boys asked how the day went and when I explained excitedly that I had caught a fish with a tag from a month ago he stated, "Who are you tagging the fish for" after showing him the Fisheries symbol at the top of the tag record page he climbed down from the boat red faced.

that's pretty impressive getting that many recaptures. Be interesting to see if in say, 6 months time they are still on the same reef or go deeper.

Survival Rate

Top stuff. Goes a long way to supporting carefully released fish I'd say.

Great to see recaptures

Great to see recaptures happening and healthy fish being released with tags. Just a shame fisheries officers have no idea whats happening in their own backyard.

Good news

Mon, 2010-08-30 17:21

We have found they dont move far either. Are you convinced they survive if handled right now?WinkThe fisheries guys would have no idea that you are tagging as it is not part of a study. You have a good recapture rate already well done.

I'm not surprised the Fisheries fellas don't know a lot about it, all tagging would be run by the research side and unfortunately, fisheries management doesn't really talk to fisheries compliance in my previous experience.
Mind you, there are that many tagging groups around it's a pity there's not more of a "whole" approach.

good to hear that dhuys are being caught with tags in then. Where roughly did you tag them off gero. I fish out of gero. We'll keep an eye out for tags from now on. Have you had any other tagged fish caught?

Not that easy

Flagpole, would love to tell you the location I have been getting my fish but would have to throw you over the side after. GOOD TRY, pulled up ten Dhies from one location about five weeks ago, have tagged thirty six Dhies in the last two months

yeah was worth a shot. Good to hear that this type of research is bein done. Have you had any tagged fish caught by other people. It's no good if people are un aware of tagged fish in the area the fisheries should inform locals of the tagged fish

most of the people tagging now

Tue, 2010-08-31 17:30

are just putting in old tags.I for one dont know who has the info or who to give the info too.All i can do is put up the recaptures that i know of.Had a couple of pms saying i should put up a post with the tags i have put in and hope that others follow suit. The only down fall is that a few recaptures will be done by people that dont frequent the site and will there for not get a full picture of what is happening.Alot of tagged fish getting recaptured lately just hope it is not because they are the only ones leftLaughingWhen i have some time to put it together i will post a page for tag recaptures unless someone with a bit more computer prowess is up to doing it before hand.

Ring Recfishwest and ask

Tue, 2010-08-31 18:02

Ring Recfishwest and ask them if they have a contact you can email the data too.

If you capture a fish with a tag you could do the same.

As lucky tim said the data is a little spread but the tag ID's are unique so the data can be used and appended to any current study and future studies.

Jewfish are a hard one to get large datasets and the more data the better.

Uncles let plenty of sized Dhufish go with tags in place.

The common misconception is that people cant keep a fish with a tag in it. FALSE.

Nothing wrong with keeping a fish to eat even if it has a tag in it. Smile

3. ANSA WA Tagging Coordinator, PO Box 366 Osborne Park, WA 6917
