Hey all!
I have recently just purchased a 3.95m dinghy. I'm planning on taking it out very soon however I need some advice. Where should I be looking to target bread and butter species such as herring squid and tailor? (I'm freo based). How should I target these species? And 25 litres of fuel with a 15hp 4 stroke outboard how much distance can I cover?
thanks guys

That fuel will last ages mate and will get u anywhere the boat is able to go. Haven't fished freo way but will be no different to anywhere else. Find some patchy weed anchore and berly herring will come around pretty quick. As for talior find some white water on the outer reef and fish that good luck mate

Head for Parmelia Bank, just
Head for Parmelia Bank, just north of Woodies. Anchor up and burley, you'll get all those species there.

If you have a smart phone
If you have a smart phone download the navionics app, cost around $13 or $15 works off GPS and uses no data, a lot of good spots are already marked on it, great place to start. Find some quality squid jigs on special , chuck them out over some weedy ground, shit the engine off and drift. Won't take long to find the squid and you can mark the spots on your navionics

That fuel will last ages, we have a 70 2stroke on a 4.6m boat and we usually use no more than 10-15L of fuel in a whole day including hours of trolling. As mentioned above for herring and skippy sand patches in between weed and burley, tailor around reefs and whiting sand patches in slightly deeper water

Mate, just go for a play on the water, you will soon see how easy it is to spot the weed patches, I'd go from woodmans point, as soon as you head out you will spot the weed. Just keep an eye on sea breeze for the wind and swell

I fished parmelia bank for
I fished parmelia bank for the first time about 3 months ago for squid... I just used google maps to find the weed banks as I didn't know the area well... There was plenty of herring around at the time and I was just using a halco twisty to catch them, tried bait but blowie after blowie. For squid I fished over towards Carnac Island in 4m & I recommend spending a little extra on the jig as I've had a higher success rate. In the past I favoured the fluro colours but now use more natural looking style jigs. I have one in blue that always catches squid when I head out.

On my 6 meter boat I usually plan for around 1km per liter. Your boat is much smaller, so you should be getting around 2kms per liter.
It's worth getting a cheap 10L plastic jerry can from bunnings and taking it as a spare in case your main tank runs out.

I have a 40hp 4stroke
I have a 40hp 4stroke pushing a 4.5m boat using a 25lt tank. I went 15km out from woodies did heaps of driving around, was calm on the way out and rough coming in.. When I got back to the ramp I still had half a tank left. For the distance you would be taking a 3.95 dinghy with a 15hp I don't think you will have a issue with a 25lt tank... But just remember when it comes in rough your fuel consumption can blow way out!

I Have a 3.7m dart with an old 25hp 2 stroke on the back, i use about 20-25litres of fuel going from leewin or point walter to the ice cream shop in the harbour and back. that is with a sizeable amount of donuts and going flat out near possible. i have run out of fuel in 1 tank on the way back to point walter before. Always worth having the 10L jerry can handy as Dtrain sugested. I have a 20L and a 25L tank, normally have the 2 stroke mix in one and plain unleaded in the other as most of the time i won't use the second tank and i think the unleaded will sit better between uses as i dont take it out too much.
Only other thing i will add is early mornings are your friend - i was out there one time and it was dead flat so i decided to nip around and get fish and chips and an icecream for lunch, came back around and the ocean was nearly impassible untill i made it around south mole - i did concider leaving my boat on the shore overnight. Also watch out for the bigger boats in the river as the millionares in the 40+ foot boats take great pride in overtaking you doing twice the speed limit and nearly washing you onto the main road even though you are doing 8.5knots.
Good luck!!
