help with making wind on leaders

so i thought id have a go making my own wind ons....

got some 80lb dacron, managed to splice it 5 or so times leaving a small loop, passed the threading needle through one leg of the dacron and out near the bottom splice, passed the other leg through the threading needle but now i cant get the second leg back through the inside of the first. I have been trying for a couple of hours, broken the threading needle, yelled and swore at it, went n had a beer, then came back and yelled and swore some more. cant get it....

it seems when the second leg is essentially doubled by passing it through the needle eye then trying to pull the needle  back through it becomes too thick to pass through the inside of the first leg.

Please, what the hell am i doing wrong?

If its getting stuck, forget the needle and just use a bit of doubled single strand wire.

I use .6 mono and 1.1mm

Thu, 2010-12-02 17:29

I use .6 mono and 1.1mm mono leader. bimini the mono (can be done nicely despite what ppl will tell you, check on sealine or ultimateangling.co.za for directions) then double figure 8s to join them. very castable with large guides on ya rod, so using 80lb leader you should be fine and strong connection. I wanna go up to a heavier leader for fishing rocky drop offs so thats the only reason im giving the windons a go. Plus making up rigs etc passes the time when I cant go fishing lol

Cheers Till, about to give it a go again with the wire idea

Thu, 2010-12-02 18:58

if the SOR shark bash happens mate you can check my leader connection, probably took me months to get right but now i love it.... fixing the twist as you go helps, also only use like 15 twists in the bimini, its just avoiding line burn thats the hard bit

still no luck with the bloody dacron, just cant get it back through itself, so f...ing frustrating

What dacron are you using?

What dacron are you using? Courtlands Green spot is soft and easy to pull through but topshot is quite stiff and a lot harder.

I got it from Oceanside, just 20m worth and didnt ask what brand. I feel like I have tried everything and cant get it to work hey....

Was good though, they were the only guys willing to sell me 20m instead of a whole spool, but yea cant get it to go through at all.

Thu, 2010-12-02 21:29

I actually found this one easier to follow, there was another one i saw last night in my search of wind on leaders but cant find it now since i wiped browser cookies and history it was really basic and the finished product had a black heat shrink over it.

its a slight variation, I was trying the double splice, a bit more basic. But the bit i got stuck with is the same in both. More and more im thinking its the dacron im using, may have to bite the bullet and buy a spool of Courtlands....

Hopefully ill finish work early tomorrow and be able to check it out with the guys at a shop...

DONE!!

Wed, 2010-12-08 20:55

ordered some Cortland green spot online last week and it arrived today. took about half an hour and i had my first wind on leader made up, another half hour and i had three more done!! the stuff i got last week just wasnt right for the job.

have tested them a good few times now and breaks at the mainline every time.

honestly reckon this is something that will catch on big time in the land based game scene over the next few years

soon as this wind dies down ill get out and have a go casting them

thanks to all those who helped out with replies and pm's!!!
