Help for an old Fisherman.

I know this is a long shot, but because of circumstances beyond my control, I'm wondering if anyone out there can help!!!

A few years ago, an old fisherman who has been going out every week for the last 40-45 years, had the hard word put on him, and he had to sell boat, car & his way of life.

He was given my phone number on the idea that I needed to learn how to fish, and he wanted someone to take him out fishing. In return I would have his spots.

Of late i.e. the past 6-12 months I have not been able to take him out. And he is sadly very desprate, as he is 78-79 ish and is aware that the big fishing ground in the sky may be tomorrow.

My problem is time and a suitable deckie, because there needs to be a crew of at least two, he is practicly wheel chair bound, needs to be lifted in/out of the boat, can walk but very painful. And has other problems now that we won't mention.

If anyone is prepared to help this old tough (and I mean tough) bugger can they send me a message. Even one trip to one of his spots would be the world to this guy.

From my point of veiw, I feel very quilty that Wife, off spring & house must come first, and he misses out.

Forgot to say that the area is the coast of Perth, he would take a taxi. Cockburn, Fremantle, Hillaries.

hi guys

it seems that someone with a larger style boat would be the go(maybe a charter boat or a old cray boat) i would be happy to come along as help/deckie and even chip in for a bit of fuel, if the timing suits.

i also have a older person around the same age that would love it as well

he is still fairly mobile and would just love to go and wet a line.

good luck

How tough is life.

This guy can only just walk, needs both knee joints replaced, can't remember why it hasn't been done. Has sugar diabetes, every bone grinds, and he has a hell of a time pulling in fish.

About 9 months ago he took it in his head to get up on his workshop bench. The termites had paid a visit and he went through and over, Hanging there up side down with his leg bone sticking out of his leg, he managed to call the ambulance.

At no point did he ever lost the "want" to go fishing. This guy used to go out in a small dingy and come back with 50 Dueies, that was probably before you were born.

I think two old timers going out together is a great idea, they would have a ball.

This Guy likes to anchor side on to the sea, the motion is such you need a good stomach.

Iana that is a lovely

thing to do,  I know if old fart was well enough (bad eyes) I could just see two old farts in the boat, but unfortunately our boat is only 18' foot long.  I can relate to your old mates knees hahaha

I know that somebody has organised boating trips for handicapped people in the Swan, but can't remember who, I do suffer with Kraft hahaha, maybe something could be organised for old fellows that love to fish but physically need a little bit of help.  Might have a talk to old fart and bring it up at the next monthly meeting next Tuesday, food for thought Iana food for thought.

Regards

Roberta

Iana, I hope that old mate

Wed, 2011-05-04 20:06

Iana, I hope that old mate ends up with a trip out. Fishing is an Old Bull/Young Bull pastime and generally fishing is the last subject spoken about when fishing with older folk. I never had the opportunity to fish with my Grandfather(s) as I was too young and they were gone by then, but it was something that mates have spoken about doing with theirs and they really enjoyed it. The older community have a lot to offer and if I was down that way, I would gladly take these guys out on my boat for the day.

I hope that when Im 'too old (difficult) to take out' someone takes the time once in a while to let an old man have a bit of fun.......It may be the last thing I want to do.

Good luck mate

Wish I had a big boat I would

Wed, 2011-05-04 20:54

Wish I had a big boat I would take him out no problems ..in my books old timers are full of knowledge and I like learning a thing or 6.
My 5.1alloy cat would prob not be suitable unless a calm day came up

I fish with my kids...

Wed, 2011-05-04 21:26

as often as we can. It's as much about spending time with them as it is about the fishing. Sure, I teach them what I know, and maybe one day they'll have their own kids and the cycle will repeat itself....I'm guessing that's what we all want, really.

I do hope that Iana can organise something for his friend, and I'd be more than happy to chip in for fuel, bait, etc. if that would help...just let me know.

regards
rusty...

I do the the same with sherbert

Wed, 2011-05-04 21:29

Hey sherbs
In all seriousness its a very good cause as we all face facts as we get older. My boat being a 4.75 wouldn't be suitable for this but I hope someone can help out and he gets stuck into a POTM contender

You have probably seen the old guy and myself (teenager (60 ish)) down at the ramp, not of late though. Its mainly about management, they can fall over, break bones or worse. Yes a bigger boat would be the go, although mine has adequate deck space, bigger would be better.

Crew, time & weather and more, just havn't used the boat enough this year.

Be interesting to see if the committee has any ideas, I'm pretty sure this guy was once a member.

Im a chance

Sat, 2011-05-07 20:18

Im a chance to give it a try one day. Dont know if my boat is quite big enough, but maybe. 24ft fibreglass, has a fair bit of deckspace on the back, and as I work away have either 3 or 6 weeks off at at time. I often find myself organising my weeks at home around the good fishing days, and would be happy to give it a go, if timing etc... comes together. I get home in about 18 days and have 6 weeks off. Could be a chance to help out a old timer
