Help - Where to try for Grey Band , Hapuka & big eye

A posted pic of a GB has prompted me to get off my ass , swallow my pride and ask for help.   Hoping to get some help on where I should try for these fish.

They are on my "to catch list" and I have tried a couple of times but no luck. I launch from Ocean reef and have had no idea where to go for them . That in mind i've just headed due west to the 200 to 250mtr mark and had a go . Have no idea what to look for on the sounder or if i'm even close to places they may inhabit. Don't think I would see fish but would think I would see some sort of structure . Haven't found anything that looks like it would hold fish. All I find is flat and featureless .

Its a long way to go and only get the chance to get that far out a couple of times a year ,weather permitting. I was hoping someone would be kind enough to give the heads up on a general area to try , what to look for on the sounder and are these fish seasonal or there all year round. Am I wasting my time out from Ocean Reef ? The winter swells will stop me heading out there but trying to do some homework for the future. Not asking for gps positions ,but would be nice LOL.

Any help would be great. Thanks Paul

the best advice i could give

the best advice i could give you is spending as much time on the water as you can.

sure somebody could give you a spot and you could go and catch fish off it but wouldnt you rather be good at something rather then just "doing it"

a good sounder is a must

try looking for good ground (drops, ledges)

i try to fish as much good looking ground as i can even if fish arnt showing on the sounder

Trying to be good at something Luke

Have been fishing for 40 years and owned boats for the past 30 years and i'm still learning . The dificulty with this sort of fishing is the lack of time I can spend out at those sort of depths. The weather has to be perfect and that doesnt happen to often. A 20 foot boat feels quite small out there. Maybe a bigger boat ? one powerball , LOL

Greybands prefer 200-250m,

Greybands prefer 200-250m, sometimes preferring the edges or on top where its flat, near good grounds often. Not alot of ground needs to be present to get them also, so look for fish and isolated ones more so.

Harpuka/Blue eye/Bass groper ect are often found in 300-500m of water and look for the edges more so and still individual fish. As Luke said, a good sounder and tranducer setup is a must and many hours on the water. As for areas, Ryan and myself fish many areas so theres no better spots as a rule, its just where the fish are.

My fishing day is mondays, try and get out most mondays. Alternate between Either my boat or a mates. Must look like a dry boat when you see it there every weekend.

They're not in just 300m!!

Different fish prefer different depths. Greybands are commonly found in less than 300m of water. Dont just head due west, there's obviously alot of water to cover out there. Have a look at your charts and start from a likely area and work that area. As with most fishing grounds, the grounds generally run north south orientation.
Persistence and time will pay dividends eventually.
