Here's a Dumb Question...
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2015-09-02 15:47
I haven’t filled up the tank in my new boat yet. Do I fill it up like a car i.e. hold down the handle until it clicks or do I have to listen for the tank to fill up and avoid filling petrol into the inlet hose?

no dumb questions mate
Will depend on your breather, a lot of boats will lose fuel out of the breather before you fill up your inlet hose, you may hear it bubbling and whistling when it is getting near to full so slow down the flow.
Not nice on paintwork or decals (depending where it is) so watch out for that.
Not many boats actually get to the top of the fill line before losing fuel through the breather so don't rely on the fuel nozzle to click for you like a car.

Be very careful until you
Be very careful until you get used to it. Boat fuel fillers are often right on face level and fuel can come pumping back up the filler hose very quickly.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Yep
As above, you need to listen for the fuel coming up the filler tube,
Most boat tanks have baffles to stop fuel surging away from the pick up, or just generally sloshing around a lot.
Sometimes the holes that join the chambers are quite small and it will take time for the fuel to level out in the tank.
So you might fill until the pump clicks of like its full, only to find out you only have half a tank or there about.

more importantly
don't fill up the rod holder....

Have seen a guy in Bunbury looking puzzled as to why his boat was taking so much more fuel than normal until he realised he was filling his fibreglass hull through a rod holder!

You will work it out once the
You will work it out once the fuel squirts out the top and gets all over you a few times!!
Some boats are a real pain they will suirt out the top at a rate of knots if your not careful and then some will slowly push fuel out the breather or into another tank if you have more. just go really slow and listen for the gurgling!

Take note of how much the tank holds when you fill it the first time.Good to know. That is assuming it is brand new and does not already have fuel in it.

Fuel Filling
Know the litres the tank holds, know what your fuel gauge shows and then fill to 90% - 95%. Use litres rather than $ at the servo - works for me.

Monitor
Whilst filling the tank for the first time have some watch the fuel gauge and record where the first 40 lts , 80 , 100 and so on so when you refill or go out with half a tank you know whether you have xx amount of fuel and where your reserve xx lts are on the gauge for peace of mind

Have some one watch the fuel vapour vents.
It is quite common for fuel to start to vent out of the full vent/s at the back of the boat before it comes out of the filling hose.
This can be mistaken as indicating that the fuel tank is full.
This can be quite exciting as you try to work out what the hell is happening with petrol coming from these vents.
In my experience with my quinine I have to wait a couple of seconds and then resume filling the tank when this happens.
I think it is caused by vapour coming from the fuel tank and on exiting via the vent tubes the vapour becomes liquid again.

The only dumb question is the one that isnt asked!
I recently had a new tank built for my boat and was fortunate to get the design right - I think. First fuel-up at the servo, the tank accepted fuel as quick as the bowser could pump it in. No fuel spewing out the breathers and bowser clicked-off 7 litres short of the calculated capacity.

How did you arrange your filler and breathers?
Gunwhale filler or in-deck? In deck avoids all the issues if you can manage it, and you can always see whats' in there

Filler and breathers
I used the original filler which is at the stern. 2 x 16mm breathers with one at the rear of tank and the other diagonally opposite at the front of the tank. The only question is whether there is enough fall in the front breather to allow any fuel to drain back into tank. Next refill should give me an idea.

Know on someone that undid
Know on someone that undid the cap in the rocker cover on an old car at a servo and could not see any oil so brought 2L and added it. When they did the second trip back into the shop the attendant asked some questions luckily. When they pulled the dipstick out oil came pouring out the dickstick hole!!
sounds dumb but they got told to check the oil at the servo, seen the guy next to them adding oil.....

Not really funny but....
mate got himself a brand new 4wd, couldnt pick it up so got his uber blonde missus to pick it up. As usual just smallest amount of fuel in it. Dutifully the poor lass dropped in at first garage she saw and filled to the brim with wrong fuel... You know what im talking about guys...
She rang me in tears asking what to do.
I said, start packing.
Brand new diesel 200 series landcruiser.... Or was it a petrol... I forget :'(

in deck filler
I lost count how many times I nearly cried as a result of fuel out the breather on the old boat. Nowdays I got a in-deck filler. Which is great to fill up with, if you know what servos have got a hose long enough to reach :-/
