Hit a Whale this morning- going buy a lotto ticket:

I was thinking twice about putting this up(grennies). But just as a warning to fellow boaties.

Heading out this morning from Rockingham ,my third solo drift fishing session.

Lucky not going fast as the condition early this morning were choppy- at exactly 8.3 mile thats when the speedo stopped, I hit a whale.

To say that it scared the shit out of me,is an under statement- huge bang. I'm in a 5.3 Stacer.

Just damn unlucky- whale wasn't on surface, but must have come up just as I was passing over it.

Got back- all good. Just had to clear all the junk/skin from speedo hole.

Off to buy a ticket tomorrow!

 I fished out deep recently

Tue, 2020-08-25 19:03

I fished out deep recently overnight and they were all around me sleeping and or resting. I could hear them all night and the funny thing is when I shifted spots they followed me. Think they liked the company or just the light on a dark night.

You may have cleaned the boat

But what about the under pants, that would have certainly woken you up with a start. Bloody whales you can't go any where without coming across them, all good that everything turned out ok

At least it wasn't serious and you got back safe

They’re everywhere

Tue, 2020-08-25 20:11

I took a chopper out to Bernier island a few weeks ago for a day chasing crays. Going out and coming in Shark Bay was a whale super highway, a few of em were fully breaching and it was an awesome sight to see. Even in greater numbers were the dugongs. I suppose having a quarter of the worlds sea grass on my back door step it's the perfect place for the sea cows to hang out.

Night about how scary it would be to hit a whale at speed. Glad your ok and the boat didn't take to much damage. I've had 1 close call at night where they came up next to the boat sitting at 20 knots and bounced of one but the outboard luckily did touch it.

Wed, 2020-08-26 12:25

We got lifted out of the water by one at Dampier a few years ago, just off Rowley Rock. How we didn't capsize is beyond me. After that we decided to go back to camp for a fortifying rum or five and a change of undies!

Scary stuff

Wed, 2020-08-26 13:56

I hit a whale about 6 weeks ago out from Cervantes 15kms off shore heading home at 30knts.......Ask EricL, he didn't sleep for a few nights even with bourbon. 20k damage to motor and 10k to transom. Motor was still in gear and running. Next time on the boat going to connect the lanyard kill switch and permantly wear life jackets. If we were flung out of the boat it would have been lights out!

10mins earlier EricL was saying how sweet the motor is running....jinxed me

Geez Wangler... that's serious stuff right there!

Know how you feel-  I insured the boat today, wasn't going to bother.  Have been thinking about insurance for awhile.

Never even thought about this situation happening.

just a thought.

On another note, you can change the measurement units on the gauge by altering the dip switches on the back of the gauge. Find using kmh & km are slightly more useful as they are smaller units, especially in adjusting trim as can see changes is speed change.
