Homemade Fads

Not to sure on the legalities of it, but has anyone hear had any experience with putting out their own homemade fads?

Just after some info on groundtackle, float arrangements etc.

John

you not allowed to leave any unmarked / charted nav aids / hazards out there mate. Think about what would happen to you if in bad weather you struck something in transit.

but is there any law about leaving them there for the day?

I remember when i was in south Africa there was alot of homemade ones which we fished off, which were even illegal over there(Thats saying something!) But it was an "in the know" kind of thing - Looked crude but boy did they produce!

What if it was some type of arrangement that consisted of cray pot floats on the surface? How would this differ from standard cray pots being deployed?

Just thinking outside the square a bit at the moment Brad, not saying I'll be doing it but I'm investigating it.

I use to fish off Malaysia

I use to fish off Malaysia and the locals make home made FADs every year.  This consist of a palm tree and line tied to a large cement block - bio degradable FAD, except for the cement block.

They also do not use GPSs, but can always find them - that is a skill, that alot of us (myself included) now a days don't have.

A few of the boys have deployed them over here in the gulf for saily season but usually get pulled up by the prawn trawlers.  For the amount of effort that goes into it I'm not sure if its really worth it - ie the cost of getting caught and setting it all up.  I would certainly not recommend it as there could be serious legal implications if anything happened and you were caught, as the boys said, navigation hazard and all.

I'll send you a PM BJ.

i had a mate tell me about a story involving tyres. They didnt sink and drifted off and it took him hours to get them back to shore on the tow, because they were full of water. Pretty funny story when he told it

In the US they use to set the tyres in cement then drop them, but that requires a barge!
