hooks for assists

gonna make up some assists , and was wondering if anyone had made any up ,  using hooks without welded eyes , such as hoodlums.

just trying to be a cheap arse , but they'll be on smaller jigs for demersals, not sambo jigs.

I recon you're better off

I recon you're better off with a few good ones than a lot of cheap ones. I have some hoodlums still sitting in my tacklebox. They're nice and strong and a good shape, but just not as sharp as owners or gamas. When you may only be hooking a couple of good fish a trip on a good day, you want them sticky sharp IMO.

My assists seem to last quite a few trips anyways. Though, my rigging method requires a welded eye hook. If doing more regular knots (i.e. nonhollow braid, or hitched over the eye not the shank), just make sure they arent wearing against the edge (whether you tie a left or a right knot can make a difference). Realistically though, just check occasionally the end of the hook eye isnt wearing through (it would take a while). Coupla knots out there for it, they're not hard.

Cheaper hooks will work 95%

Cheaper hooks will work 95% of the time but when you hook that fish or a lifetime and the hook fails you will be pretty upset. If your making assist hooks I like decoy pike and shout kudoku

I use hoodlums on my assists, if a 50kg sambo cant destroy them then thats good enough for me. A hoodlum straight out of the box is prob sharper than a decoy that has caught a couple of fish or been used on a couple of trips, left in jig bag salt corosion etc... Cheap option, can fit brand spankers next trip out. Flash knots arn't necessary double your cord go around the shank and then up through the eye. Main thing is your pulling off a solid ring or top shelf split ring not the jig.

 I've used hoodlums a lot

I've used hoodlums a lot over the last 4-5 years for bait and assists, and never have had a problem. I also use sj's and Decoy Cutlass, and they are fantastic.

The eyes can be a bit small

The eyes can be a bit small on some of the non-jig hooks and they're just for mono, not cord.

that's why i wanted to use em. reckon you'd be doing well to snap one. pretty much anchor the boat off one.

I was gonna use 2/0 up on my 100 gram ish  jigs

was just worried about the eye not being welded if you were using the overhand knot around the hook shank and then through the eye.

Most sambo hooks dont have a

Most sambo hooks dont have a welded eye and they hold up fine (thuough depends on the sharpness of the eye end). Just do the knot so its on the 'correct' side and you're unlikely to have problems (otherwise, just check and replace).

And the SJ41s are plently strong enough.
