How do you combat seasickness??

Hi all

Yesterday my daughter and I ventured out from the Dawesville Cut to check out a couple of potential demersal sites for the upcoming season starting next Thursday. While the winds were light ESE, the waves were SW and a little bit lumpy.
After finding our first 'spot', it didn't take long for her to start feeling the effects of the 'rolling of the boat' and the next thing I know, she's 'over the side'...I know it's not funny, but it's amazing how quickly others can feel sick, once they see someone else sick.
We never got to check out spots 2 and 3, as we headed back in...no fun out there when you're not feeling well!!

What are your recommendations for combating the effects of seasickness...I'm guessing the tablets available from most chemists all do a similar job.

Thanks in advance of your help.

regards
rusty

is to just take the daughter landbased fishing.......

Aside from that, I have found avomine the best tablet for seasickness with minimal side affects like drowsiness and cotton mouth. But make sure to drink plenty of water while you are out.

everyone is different. where one tablet works for one it might not work for another. as Pete said, Travacalm. my wife is a really bad sufferer of that dreaded affliction and these are the only one that worked for her. best bet is to start with one sort and keep trying till you find one that works. its not a quick fix it might take a few types to find the right one or you could score it right the first time. but please as Huggy said , keep up the fluids, even if you just sip away all day at least your getting the water down

Tablets

I've used Kwells and Travelcalm and they both work fine for me. Just make sure you take them half an hour before you heard out.
I was actually put off buying a boat because I hated getting seasick but I've found that because I go out almost every weekend I now don't get seasick. So I guess the best way to combat seasickness is go out a much as possible.

I find I feel worse now when I'm back on land, can't stop the swaying sensation...

Seasickness

Thanks for all your comments.
We'll give the tablets a go, and like you've suggested, if the first ones don't work for us, we'll try something else.

Hey Huggy, the daughter is as keen as me to hit the water in the new boat.....don't think leaving her to go LB would go down very well :(

Mate, I have tried them all (including the random shit) and I am yet to find anything that is even close to being as good as the ET pills. No drowsiness (has caffeine aswell), No dryness of the mouth and best of all no sea sickness!

Best pill I have ever had hands down

G/f takes travel calm but does the job perfect except she gets hungry and then eats the esky haha. Been on the boat many times now though she can now handle calm seas (squiding) without a tablet. Also i may look into those pressure point bands that you can get for an xmas pressy.

Tape your second and third toes together on both feet. I know it sounds weird but I stopped a girl throwing up within 5 minutes of doing this to her. I'm a believer.

Travacalm

Sun, 2010-12-12 16:04

Either travacalm or just get your head over the side and get it over with, as long as the gut is strong enough to battle on for the 5 minutes after you've hurled you come through it.

5 days

Sun, 2010-12-12 19:46

Picked a new decky up in Exmouth, he didn't stop herking for 5 days. Just as well because it would have been another 9 days before we came back in to unload. Everything he ate lasted 10-15 minutes before he got to taste it again.

Best remedy is not to touch milk or cheese and get the ginger nut biccies or lumps of ginger out.

If nothing else works, eat pineapple, it doesn't stop it but you get to taste it twice.

Old Remedy

Sun, 2010-12-12 19:26

An old Guru told me once to jump in the water and hold onto the side of the boat for around 10 minutes. You will then feel the boat moving but your body will adjust because of the water and also you will stop worrying about being sick. This is because you will be to worried about sharks, cured everyone i know.

I used to get crook all the time.
I once read in an old magazine a column by Dick Lewers, he's like an old fishing guru. He said to ensure you have a good sleep before, have a good breakfast and then once on the boat, have a beer or two.
Well I rarely get the sleep, or have breakfast, and I cant stop at just a couple beers, but I dont spew any more!!
I really think it works.
Get on the piss and have a great day. I think the beer gives you confidence.
How old is your daughter? May have to give her light beer!

Couple cheeky beers

Mon, 2010-12-13 13:05

Love it Pale Ale!!

I am not the best with rough seas but have to agree with the beer thing, couple cheeky ones on the way out takes the edge off. Mixed with Kwells you forget about it pretty quickly.
Also keep in the fresh air, worst thing to do is go underneath and try and sleep in the dark while the boat is rocking.

Cheers

When also else fails and its a longish trip

Mon, 2010-12-13 14:51

Despite the ban in Oz on Scopolamine this stuff is by far the best. Can cause drowsiness, and if you are not careful in washing your hands after sticking it behind your ear and wipe your eye you will see 2 fish instead of the one you hold.
You can without being illegal get them from NZ pharmacies and trust me they work, and up to 3 days.
http://www.transdermscop.com
I have 6 patches I got from NZ always ready in the evnt I go for a long charter like the Monties etc. Fortunately dont suffer badly ever but even feeling a little crook after a few beers etc makes for a miserable time at sea.
One other remedy is to ask the skipper to take the helm if you have a RST or he will supervise. Concentrating on something important often overcomes it.
Dont advertise what I do for a crust but its a pity it was removed from Oz because idiots used it for recreation purposes instead of the real indication.

pills

Thu, 2010-12-16 14:58

can also get this stuff as pills - works, but it is nasty! Biggest seas I've ever been, 12-15m swells (on a big ship). I was sick as a dog and popped a scop pill (on an empty stomach...already been hurking). Within 2 minutes I couldn't focus, 3 minutes I couldn't move arms or legs and a minute later I was out. Didn't move from the position I passed out in for 13 hours and by then the worst of the storm was over.

A quote from another forum

Mon, 2010-12-13 15:52

Here in NZ, there is only the one really reliable seasick remedy, and that is the Paihia Bombers.
These are only available from the Paihia Pharmacy (in the Bay of Islands) their ph is 09-402-7034 fax -7342.

They are a 2 pill system, one is an anti-histamine based pill, the other is a caffiene derivative. The combined result is you do not get seasick AT ALL, and also do not get drowsy.

They are really well known over here among regular sea users. They have been off the market for months, due to the govt suddenly deciding that they need to go thru a new certification system, leaving NZ feeling queezy on the sea, but HOORAY they are back on the market again now, I just got my pills today! yaaaayyy!!

They are NZ$2.50 a dose, max of 20 doses per person. They last for about 24hrs each dose.

Side effects? They make the back of your throat dry, due to the antihistamine, and they ride a lot better I have found if you have something in your belly, but then, I am sensitive to caffiene, even coffee on an MT stomach makes me feel bluuurrgh.
But man, when you are out in the weather we get here, it is DAMN good to know you will be happi-de-doo-dah all day with the Paihia bombers!

Oh, and yes,i think they do send these pills around the world, they get yachties all over the pacific calling for them, i know that anyhow!

r,gate just be careful

Mon, 2010-12-13 18:01

just be careful for kids under 6yrs of age

Kwells on my packet says children 2 to 7yrs a quarter of tablet and that's it for 24hrs.

I swear also by Black Moores ginger tablets 400mgs.
but it also says children under 6yrs - Only as professionals prescribe
6-12yr olds 1 to 2 tablets half a hr before going out then half a tablet to one tablet every two hrs as required

I take 2 kwell and 3 ginger tablets after breakfast, wait half hour than I am great out in the boat, can even eat lunch without a burly trail
Good luck with your kids

My kids are grown up....

Mon, 2010-12-13 22:20

But even adults get seasick.

Thanks Roberta for the ginger tablets and dosage of Kwells (and others) for kids...it's possible that I could have little kids on the boat some day so being prepared is always a good thing.

Thanks to everyone else for their tips, too....can't say I could handle a beer or two as a way of not feeling sick, in fact I reckon the opposite would be true in my case!

Beer

Mon, 2010-12-13 22:33

If you have to take beer with you on a fishing trip as an excuse to prevent seasickness you shouldn't be out there and the sooner they bring in penalties for it the better.

Sure, I love a beer and will take 2-3 midstrenth cans with me ona trip but they won't be opened if the weather is suspect or untill we have got our tally and its time to steam home.

Ive always used Travacalm...taken an hr before departure then a few over the course of the day. Drink a heap of water tho and try to stay out of the cabin that ever helps :P. A friend once told me to eat oranges...the vitamin C helps with the queasiness...i tried it and yeah it worked for me but as discussed above try a few things andsee what works. Good luck :D

Go back a few more years and we'd get bags of cow hooves/hocks and they would live down the back untill needed in the pots. Sometimes they would be there for a week.

You would grab one out of the bag and end up with a hand full of hair, give it a flick and the toe caps would fly off and maggots by the millions an inch long and usually a skinfull the night before didn't help. Herking and dry reaching while you worked, there was no such thing as stopping because you were sick.
