How to keep live baits alive in a dinghy?
Submitted by woody on Thu, 2011-03-03 21:29
Whats the best way to keep mullet, bony herring etc alive...Pilbara creek fishing in a 12 foot dinghy? I usually use a small battery powered aerator in a bucket but it doesnt work that well.....Ive seen buckets with holes in the top section, hung over the side, how does that go?
Have just picked up a proper bilge pump type aerator that sprays water onto the surface....havent tried it yet. What do you guys use?
Cheers

You can get a small live bait
You can get a small live bait well, but they are not cheap. Look for something with no corners or an oval one with the water flow from the side.

I use one of the white
I use one of the white plastic buckets with a lid. Drill a heap of holes in the top half and just hang it over the side. Works just fine.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

I built one for about $20
I already had a bielge pump though.
One of those small plastic bins with a lid (look like a normal big green house bin.
Somm old retic fittings and a bit of garden hose took about 20min to make. works a treat, but mine sits on the rear transom
so over flow water runs out side boat. Can post some pics if your interested. Or like Dodgy said bucket with holes.

Aerators don't well well in
Aerators don't well well in hot climates as the water temp is what kills a lot of bait. We change the water over regularly and that works fine. A live bait tank in the water tied off to the boat also works, just remember to pull it back in berfore you leave!!
A while back I tried a bilge pump to pump water into the bucket sitting in the boat and at the same time syphoned out the bucket water. I kept the siphon going all the time through a 12 mm type hose (so the bait can't fit through it) and intermittenly switched the pump on when the level got low. You could try that or simply top it up with another bucket.
As long as you change the water over regularly you will be ok.

Im with the Bucket with holes
On the rear of my boat I have a Live well, but putting the bait in there with an aerator merely cause them to kark it, so now it is used for tackle storage!!!
As mentioned the water not only de-oxygenate, but fouls, so simply aerating doesn't work, you need fresh water flow, ie rigging some pump as mentioned above.
I believe in KISS (keep it simple stupid) and cant be Faarkd and now use a sealed bucket with holes and a rope over the side, and the bait stays fresh as.
Need to gather more livies now!!!

Cheers guys for all the replies....I reckon I'll be keeping it simple and going with the holey bucket.....probaly good thing as my new pump draws 3amps and wont take long to drain my little battery pack I use for my sounder....space and weight is at a premium when fishing out of tinnies!
