How to stop weeds growing!

Hi All,

Was wondering if there are any landscapers here that can give me some advice?

I've ripped up some lawn and was going to put rainbow stone down instead.  However, to avoid weeds growing through I was going to put weedmat down though I was wondering if there's something else I could put under the weedmat for extra protection from weed growth?

Reason being I've put some weedmat down in other areas of the garden and still get small weeds coming through were there are holes in the mat.

I won't be planting any plants in this area so it doesn't matter what goes into the soil...

cheers

Wayne

i would be spraying with a strong  glycol and putting builders black plastic down then the weed matt if you want but once the stone is in the moss and sand that builds up bettween the rocks will allow weeds to grow so just spray it every month or so to stop the weeds

Use Glean herbicide if you can get it, that kills everything. Might be a bit tough to get though. If you know someone who kills weeds n stuff as a job, then they may be able to help you out. Another product you can look for is Bushwacker, it also has sort of the same stuff as Glean, but may be easier to get but not at bunnings etc, you need to go to a rural type place that sells to farmers etc for that. Expect to pay about $50 for 5 or 6 satchels, but you only need a little bit mixed in water. If your in Busso or nearby, I can help you out.

Cheers

Hey Superviser It's actually

Hey Superviser

It's actually called Glyphosate and it needs to be available as an isopropolene salt. In it 450 form it is the best to knock almost all weeds on it head. Black plastic is good but water actually pools on it and allows for weed seeds to germinate. A good quality weedmat it the preferred option but you will still get weeds from time to time just through distribution by wind and birds/insects. Just a regular spray with Glyphosate will keep on top of the problem. I used to have my own landscaping business with a licence to spray.

Glycol on the other hand is the active ingredient in radiator coolant. Very different stuff.

Cheers Mick

at least with glycol the weeds wont overheat in the sunLaughing.       . there is no real way to eliminate weeds compleetly only hold them at bay, just a regular spray or pull them as they show is the best bet

Good advice here.

To my knowledge, Glyphosate is one of the only herbicaides that are safe for ground water etc becuase it breaks down veyr quickly in the environment. Its only effective when sprays on foliage and if it gets on any other plants it can simply be hosed off.

Alternatively, you could just get a goat.

Get a big bottle of glysophate and a 5L pressure spray pack. Costs bugger all and takes 10 minutes each week when having a beer. Plastic, weed mats etc are all useless.

In this situation though cammos, he's pulling up a lawn which are an absolute pain to kill especilly if its a couch lawn. A proper geo-textile will stop the grass regrowing.

Glyphosate + Simazine

Sun, 2010-01-03 19:33

Mate use Glyphosate and Simazine (perhaps with an adjuant) after a day or say wet the soil to activate the simazine- this will give you up to 3 month residual control.

I was told by a garden guru mate to use newspaper as weed mat and it works a shit load better than the real mccoy, bit cheaper aswell! make it a few layers thick though!
