Bunbury

Bunbury sea rescue had a 6 or 7 metre one as their first rescue vessel years back. There is a 7 metre one up here in Carnarvon but I've never seen it out to be able to comment on it though I have heard they are a wet boat with spray blowing forward from the tunnels

Have never been on one

but I have seen one down south a few times and it was around 5m running twin 50hp 4 stroke engines. Seemed to slice the waves pretty well on the wayout, but thats just an observation from a distance.

They are allegedly the best of both worlds - ie nice slicing action of a mono hull underway and the stability of a cat at rest (or something like that). Sounds great in theory.

My old man had a mate that had one ~6m from memory.

I went out off Albany in it once and it was a very nice ride and super stable at rest.

Hope this is of some use to you.

I have fished off a Hydrofield Cougar, 6m in length from memory and a very nice boat to spend a day on. No pounding at all and very stable at rest, they are a nice boat.

Got in touch with a mate who used to skipper the rescue boat in Bunbury. The reason they got rid of it is because it had a bad habit of broaching .He reckons sometimes it was frightening the way it came round without warning.
Good in every way except a following sea

Do you know if that applied to the smaller models ?

I'd imagine the rescue boat would be a fair size

RUN

Mon, 2010-02-08 18:00

Talk about a small world ,was a passenger in a 7 metre one for a run over to the islands today in 15/20 knot S/Sw wind and 1/2 -1 metre seas..

Found that it did run very well down wind with little sign of broaching but it didn't like anything on the nose.I was 5foot 10 when we left Carnarvon and only 5 foot by the time we got to the islands. We were down to about 12=15 knots it was that bad, considering I would have expected to have been doing that or better in my 5 metre rig and we weren't going straight in to it,bang, bang and spray ,spray all the way over.If I had a choice there would be no way I would even contemplate buying one,but thats only my opinion.

Looks like I will need some wet weather gear then. Am getting a 5 mtr centre console built. Mainly for the Bay and around the cape with the kids, the stability won me .

You will need 2 inch thick foam rubber carpets to take some of the banging out of your feet

Cat

Tue, 2010-02-09 12:25

I have a cat and love the way that rides, a little big for what you are after though, have you thought of getting a cat made up??

There are also the webster twin fishers going around they are more in your size range and are ally, I imagine they would go ok. Never been on one though.

I looked into the trihull when buying mine but the general consenis was they bash a bit too much.
