Hypothetical

If you saw some one fishing somewhere would you fish that spot later on.

Like if you saw someone on a rock somewhere along the coast , would you go there to have a try as well, or if you see a boat drifting along somwhere would you ping the spot and go back later to give it a go .

I read some people will only fish some spots at night or early morning so no one see's them , do we really have to be so secretive ????

I have never pulled up to a spot and thought " wow someone is here I better not fish here "

What do you guys recon ???

MAV.

Tough call Mav

I certainly don't appreciate guys dropping in on me within 10m out 18nm from shore, there is a heap of water out there and it really P's me off when people cut in on your drift. I know I don;t "own" the spots that I fish, but I would never muscle in on a guy that is obviously fishing a spot that I also have pinged on my GPS. I would rather move off another kilometre and fish another spot, then come back later when he is gone.

As for shore based stuff, I remember fishing North Mole in my early 20's getting there before the crack of dawn to get a good spot near the end when the bonito were running, and I would get really P'd off when guys would see you catching fish and muscle in so you bearly had room to cast. Manners......that's what its all about.....Manners, I hope my kids grow up to respect peoples space and let them have a go rather than pushing in. That might be an old fashioned approach but I feel a hell of a lot better for doing it that way.

Besides I love exploring and finding new ground on my own, it just adds to the experience.

Having said all that I am not averse to knocking my reel into freespool when a boat comes too close, so as to look like I am not catching anything. There aren't too many spots out there that aren't known by at least a half dozen anglers, so adding more to that is a sure fire way to turn a good fishing spot to a baron wasteland in short time.

I was out fishing a lump

Sun, 2006-08-13 16:40

I was out fishing a lump somewhere in the Dampier Archipelago that has been quite productive to us, usually providing us with a good feed of snapper and coral trout. This particular day we were there we saw a boat come screaming towards at as a rate of knots and then back off about 20m from us. I was fuming, there is the whole ocean and here he was stopped right next to us. He was there for about a minute, did a U-Turn and screamed off. One guess what he was doing! I couldn't beleive someone would have the nerve to come right up to you, plot your spot on their GPS and then cruise off!

Honey Holes

Sun, 2006-08-13 16:41

Due to more and more people out fishing these days, and a diminishing resource meaning there is less to go around (personal observation only), secrecy is a fact of life. Specific things (GPS spots) I might share with close fishing mates, but don't expect too much if I don't know you from a bar of soap. On the other hand I wouldn't expect specific info being given to me either if I did'nt know you.

Fishing spots are fishing spots, there would be very few spots left that aren't fished by at least more than one person. If you do have a secret honey hole (I had one in Kununurra where there was usually one barra virtually on tap year round, even in the dry!) then I'd be keeping it very close to ones chest. It only takes one idiot with loose lips to ruin a spot.

Pinging peoples spots when there drifting is a low act, but no more so than having some clown anchor a couple of hundred metres behind your boat, in your berley trail. Now that annoys me! Its amazing how many people with all the flash gear, still can't think for themselves (or like a fish).

I have no problem with

Mon, 2006-08-14 21:30

I have no problem with sharing the burleying duty as long as there is some respect!!

I have fished a particular land based spot quite sucessfully in the past, I was seen once pulling in a nice 10+ kilo snapper. The next night the bloke who saw me was back with at least 5 of his mates and they all had about 5 rods in the water each. Their must have been 25 lines covering the area. No-one else even got a look in. (WANKERS)

Another time a bloke tried to tell me to move cause he wanted to fish where I was. There was more than enough room for both of us. He ended up standing on the rocks above me and casting over the top of me. (EXPLETIVE)

But their are some respectable people out their, at another spot, literally only enough room for one ( a cast, drift and retrieve spot) I arrived to see someone already at the spot. I was leaving when he stopped me to say we could share the spot, by taking turns, one casting the other burleying, then as the first was retrieving, the next cast etc. It was a fantastic night, we must have caught 2 dozen taylor each, we shared stories about fishing, tips and techniques, a totally enjoyable night. That is the essence of fishing, enjoying the pass time and sharing it with others.

From the attidude of some selfish people, I understand why some people are reluctant to give up secret spots and share information.

Its a shame!

im with andy . nothing

Thu, 2006-08-17 17:56

im with andy . nothing annoys me more than fishing 15 nm out and have some PERSON come and fish with in 10 mt of me its just not on. another example is cray season you find a nice litle lump and just as your about to drop your pots some one else comes screaming up and drops em right infront of you. call me old fashioned but thats the way ive been brought up , to respect others and not to poach spots.
p.s. there is some exceptions e.x. sambo ji9gging spots etc.
