Rumours
Definately not rumours. I was out there on Sunday in one of PGFC's comp. One of the other boat out there had 2-3 marlin come up to the back of his boat. One's a large (150-200kg) Black and 2 Stripeys half the size. No hookup butm, just came up for a look see. We were trolling with the big gear as well but no joy for us. Water is warm enough with tonnes of baitfish out there, so why not.

Yeah im thinking ill give it another week or two and then dedicate a whole weekend to dragging lures around!
Not too confident on this whole metro marlin thing though I have to say. Am still yet to actually meet anyone who has caught one, its always a mate of a mate (or a guy on a forum/magazine etc)
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

just wondering how far past rotto one would start looking for marlin. Not that i got a chance in hell of catching one in my tub but wondered how close they come in. I've got a good feeling that this year will be a great year for palagics as the water is almost boiling out there and if my mrs catch last week is anything to go by the northern species are definately making their way down south

Marlin rumours
Well the stickfish rumour mill is running hot and so it should be!! There hasnt been a lot of boats from the club targetting them but those that have been out there have got some results. Unfortunately for me Mark who I fish with just sold his boat before this exciting bite happened and I havent been able to experience the marlin fishing this season yet. Anyway as the post have indicated the action is out at the trench. The trench is easily shown on your chart plotter and it is actually the original delta of the swan river from many moons ago. PGFC has 6 FADs out there stretching from the south wall up to the north wall with a couple in closer. For the novice game fisherman if they were to work their way up or down the trench near the FADs then they are in the right sort of area. Being able to interpret warm and cold currents along with a good sounder to mark bait or individual fish is a huge benefit.
Saturday just gone had some boats in the thick of action but unfortunately nothing landed. I know that Damo on Soleado had a marlin within 30m of the boat to have the hooks pull. Our President Johnno Wroth's boat had a BIG blue on that nearly spooled them on 24kg and another lost. One other boat not from PGFC also hooked up but also lost the fish. So aprt from the other stories told on the site (which have been verified by anglers or skippers) there are a couple more to ponder.
It is all looking like this season maybe one to head to the trench on the right weather and troll some plastic or baits and give yourself that chance to catch a metropolitan billfish that has been quiet for so many years.
As far as the Perth Game Fishing Club goes its like all clubs there is a great deal of passion for bunch of men, women and junior anglers that all have a connection in chasing gamefish. The club has pretty close to a social night once a month where we have guest presenters, chit chat and a great deal of comaradarie at these nights. We also have club day outs as well as the more competitive tournaments. many of us head to Gamex and now AIBT to chase the fishing north as well as participating in tournaments in WA, Aust and overseas. All in all its a great club and we try our best to put back as much as we get by looking after the FADs from Perth and promoting an ethic of tag and release where we can. It has probably been at least 12 or 15 years since I have seen a billfish weighed out of Perth so hats off to the club for their dedication to tag and release.
I hope this helps some of you out and if your interest is sparked then we have a social coming up on the 1st Feb at RPYC annexe, Challenger harbour club rooms on Mews Rd in freo.
Cheers Rhyss

Could have been a bit of that
Could have been a bit of that in it. Nah he was just plain unlucky. Would come off strike only to have the next fisho hook up 3 minutes later.
Still got the boat and will have for a long time yet. Over 800hrs in 2 years. Its well set up for the variety of fishing we do and the rods are well and truly out of the way. Only time they are a pain is when I want to pitch a bait over the heads of the boys if they are too slow.

Yep thats true. Ross Newton got one on Reel Teaser off here whilst bringing his boat don for some work to be done on it. Its our club's opening weekend next weekend and I am just hanging out. Cross fingers the weather gods will be good. As a guess I would think the weather would be calming down by then. I also heard from graeme Heal from mandurah that he ahad a hookup north of Mandurah but a touch south of the south FAD. Water temp is still good although down a touch on previous week.
