He had to take the hook with him unfortunately - was not coming out - but otherwise unharmed
Yea - it's fencing wire - in NZ they are called Cod-Catchers - maybe they scare some fish but they are as tough as anything and go well with my 80lb braid.... :-)
many years ago, like 40 or so, we tried to eat one. Green grey flesh, and tasted foul. I thought they were protected? Always release them now, get some big ones down south, the sometimes get curious and follow you when diving, drop an abb and they will be your friend for life.
Marrisy.
As far as I know they are protected on the East Coast but not over here - I'd equate them to carpet sharks in NZ - not much use for anything. Have caught before but I thought there were a couple of different species.
As for the rig - Caught Snapper on them before but not often - snapper do seem to be shy of them - better for the bait munchers - skippy etc.
Jeez - the way everyone is going on you'd think I'd invented a square wheel. It's not the only rig I use - my light gear is a 4ft ugly stick with 2kg braid.
"works OK for me - caught a dhufish on it this morning - have also caught a hammerhead, skimpy, snapper, rays - even whitin"
also, gonna call bullshit on 2kg mainline. i highly, highly doubt you'd be landing hammerheads and rays on 2kg. and skimpys, well thats just another story.
Drop lines are just a little bit different to 50 metres of twisted farmer's fencing wire but then again, he doesn't need a sinker with all that weight.

Why not?
Nothing wrong with eating Port Jackson sharks, bit tough but otherwise ok. Bloody hard to fillet if you don't know how.
They are not protected and never have been

Nope, it's a common misconception
Then again i've never heard of anyone keeping them except for an aquarium pet if they're small
I rate them on the same level as Nor'westers and Rays - Pests

Savings
You could save on rope and just hang the hooks off your anchor chain? Some 10mm D shackles should do the job?

Seriously, yes = Port Jackson, no = never heard of anyone keeping them. (Never heard anyone say they taste bad either though!)

Don't net the big ones
One sure way of stuffing up your net. They thrash and they got spikes that mess up everything. Did that once and never again.

Watch out for the spines on the fins

Sure you might catch some
Sure you might catch some fish on dodgy rigs, but a less visible leader (I.e. not rope) is going to be more effective the majority of the time.
