illuminance light while fishing at night
Submitted by Fish guts on Mon, 2013-08-26 16:17
on Friday night,(23/08/13) just before the ffb out from woodies me and the bro decided to just stop for a look. we dropped down our lines and to our surprise as we broke the water quite a bright light flicked down the line as it sunk. same thing winding back up. about 2-3 meters from the surface the disturbance to the water from our lines created the light. for the record we weren’t smoking anything. id be interested to hear what this phenomena is.

Bioluminescence
It's caused by plankton lighting up when they bump into your lines.

Plankton - Used to night dive
Plankton - Used to night dive quite alot, used to love turning our torches off and swimming around and found a wooden pallet on the bottom and when we shook it the whole thing lit up or rubbing the jetty pilon for the same result. Also see it on the beach at night sometimes where the water is washing up the sand.

phosphorescence quite common
phosphorescence
quite common in the bow wave when steaming at night and as said, from marine organisms.
Looks pretty spectacular on some particular nights/areas
