I'm looking for advice please-Jetski Fishing.

G'day- I've been doing lots of reading and watching the vid links on here. Now I would like to ask some questions please

At present I am fishing from a kayak around Garden Island and the various reefs, and have been for several years,so I now want to get out there faster and spend more time fishing rather than paddling. I know that this may open up a "can of worms":

However, could the more experienced Jetski fisho's please give me some advise-Thanks.

: Do I go new or a late model secondhand ski?

: What is the better brand/make and size of jetski to purchase for fishing?

Thanks again.

Regards.

Allan.

Hey mate I do most of my jetski fishing around cockburn sound and garden island. I'm actually upgrading later in the year to a brand new model so mine will be up for sale, it is a 2008 Yamaha FXHO 160hp 3 seater. Has served me very well and alot of the guys on here can vouch for that :P

When looking for a ski for fishing you want to concentrate on the 3 seaters, they are the most stable, and fish 2 ppl quite easily, my current ski is 3.37m in length and quite a few of the new models are pushing 3.5m plus.
Your two main brands are Yamaha and Seadoo. Comparing these two is like holden vs ford, although some skis may suit your needs better. Most of the fishing mods on the net are for seadoo and yamaha also. I found the yamaha fxho is the perfect inbetweener ski with 160hp. The seadoos seem to go from only 120hp straight to 215hp supercharged.

jet ski vs salt water

Thu, 2012-05-31 18:38

I'm gettting interested in the idea of jet ski fishing, but I do wonder about a few things.

What is it like driving a jetski back from the far side of say, Garden Island to Palm beach if the wind picks up and things get choppy? and secondly, how does a

jetski cope with a salt water environment as far as corrosion is concerned?

Realy depends on the shape of the ski, they all handle the chop differently but I do plan my trips around the wind forecast because you do get wet. I'm not going to launch at rockingham and head to the north of the sound if it is forecasted to howl southerly when I plan to be heading home.
Jetskis were built for the ocean mate the only way the engine will corrode is if you flood the hull

I get all that

Thu, 2012-05-31 19:32

Any boat has limitations, I've got a 19 foot glass boat, and the old 1.5 m waves and 15 knots works fairly well as a rule of thumb, On a ski would you drop that to something closer to 1.0 and 10?

To be honest I wouldn't have a clue, I just travel at a speed I find comfortable and that im not going to get soaking wet lol. Swell lumps aren't so bad as you just manoeuvre around them its the chop that is killer. I find that with short sharp chop tge faster you go the better as the ski just skips along rasher than crashing into them

 Thanks for the replys-I use

Thu, 2012-05-31 19:47

Thanks for the replys-I use the kayak from Palm Beach to Garden Island/Point Peron, and I'm guessing that I would use the same common sense when heading out to fish on a Jetski...it's just that I would get out there and back a lot quicker.

So-anyone want to buy a fully setup fishing kayak

I'm also thinking that I would purchase a secondhand jetski first, then I can learn and experience the difference, and then also "upgrade" at a later date.

So I will start with a few pm's.

Thanks again.

 Hello again-Im wrapped I purchased a ski

And I got to say a big thank you to the advise on here,it made my decision a lot easier.

I've purchased a 2010 Yamaha FXHO with 52hours.It was owned by a 67 year old who used it for fishing around Geographe Bay.The poor bloke has had knee surgery, which hasn't gone too well and can no longer ride the ski.

It's already fitted with a Electronic GPS/Fishfinder and anchor system.

I can't get the smile off my face-so give me a couple of weekends to get use to the ski and I hopefully I will meet up with some of you in Cockburn Sound.

Thanks .

Yes I know. Right place and right time. This ski is also black(must be the standard colour) with light tan/gold colouring. The the seat is also a goldy type colour.

I've just finished reading the manual, and heaps of pages regarding the Fishfinder.

I look forward to meeting up with you sometime out on the water,no doubt we will see each out there somewhere and hopefully catching some fish.

Ohh -Anyone want to buy a Wilderness Tarpoon 120 fishing Kayak(cheap)
